Is it just sitting in one position, or moving around randomly. What year/model are we talking? I'll do what I can.

I believe there is a fuel gauge modulator, or something like that, (not sure of the exact term) on GM's later than '96. It's purpose is to "smooth out" the reading from the fuel tank float, so the gauge doesn't go up and down in response to fuel slosh. That may be the problem. I would call a Chevy dealer, and see if someone in the service dept. can advise you about this. I don't know where it is located, or how much it costs. There is a procedure to determine where the problem is, but is too lengthy and requires test equipment. Is the reading basically correct, or just stuck there, no matter how much fuel is in it?

its just stuck there and i go by the trip meter and just say thats a waste of a gauge and space

Did your fuel tank get bottomed out recently (both by running out of gas, or being struck on the ground) or was the fuel pump replaced recently?
