Hi guys....Good to be back on the forum, comps been down for a while.
Quick question about VTEC. Now I have a 5th gen civic coupe with the d15b engine. 1.5i :( Its a non-vtec engine but I could have sworn there was a vtec boost today.
I had to accelerate like hell earlier today to avoid driving head on into a bus. I reached about 6000 revs in 2nd gear and there was a definate extra boost of power.
Did I imagine it or do all engines work like that? I still havent IDd my car exactly so nothing would surprise me.

You could try checking under the hood for a sticker with your specs
about your engine, then you know for sure ;)
About that boost, I have 1.6i and no VTEC :( , but when I push the gas
in second gear and go into the 5500-6000 revs I feel my car
taking a sprint to
So I guess its kinda normal

You didn't imagine that, your car just peaks his Hp that high, see, this is what i found in the specs for you engine:
Horsepower (SAE)
125 bhp @ 6600 rpm (EX, Si)
102 bhp @ 5900 rpm (DX, LX)
92 bhp @ 5500 rpm (VX)
70 bhp @ 5000 rpm (CX)

I had driven a coupe for about a year 2, it was also a 1.5i, non-vtec, but also felt like a vtec, about 4500/5000 revs I felt a push in the back.

Just like the guys said, that's where peak power is being made and so you're feeling it, suppose it's kinda like VTEC kicking in. Here's your ful specs anyway :
92-95 Civic
D15B7 1493cc (may not the the B7 but should be very similiar)
4 cyl, 16 valve
SOHC
9.2:1 c.r.
PGM-FI (MPFI) 102 bhp @ 5900
Redline: 6800 rpm 98 lb-ft @ 5000

I alway liked that car, it feels much faster then ...eh... another car...for example my car, while they should be very close (accord 10.1 coupe 9.9 sec).
I once had another person with me in the coupe and won from a similar accord like mine (1 person in it), ofcourse the level of fuel etc. plays part 2, but such thing is nice.
I remember girls were always talking about a 'sports-car' instead of 'car' or 'honda' or so. Have you the same experience 2? :D

Yeah ive had that quite a few times actually. The civic really looks seriously aggressive from the front.
Ive had people see my car parked outside and act real shocked when I tell them its mine. It does feel fast from inside the car and most of the people I take in my car dont know too much about speeds. :smoker2:

I think their are a lot of misconseptions about Vtec from non-Honda owners or newbies. I've heard a lot of people confusion Vtec with VTi. They always ask: "how much hp does the Vtec has", then I ask what engine and you get a response like: "the Vtec, I just told you!"
As for the Vtec kick on non-Vtec cars, I have it to at +/- 6000 rpm.

Basically, VTEC is a mechanism that Honda use in some of their engines, the VTI is a Civic that has a VTEC engine in it. For more details on VTEC check the FAQ in the Civic forum.

Ahha like that
Is there any difference between the 2 in power?
I mean is a CRX VTEC the same as a Civic VTI
Or are there minor differences

´90-´91 Civic VTEC = 1.6l DOHC VTEC with about 150hp
´90-´92 CRX VTEC = 1.6l DOHC VTEC with about 150hp
´92-´95 Civic VTi = 1.6l DOHC VTEC with about 160hp
´92-´98 CRX VTi = 1.6l DOHC VTEC with about 160hp
´96-´00 Civic VTi = 1.6l DOHC VTEC with about 160hp
´92-´95 Civic ESi = 1.6l SOHC VTEC with about 125hp
´92-´98 CRX ESi = 1.6l SOHC VTEC with about 125hp
Not sure if everything is right! But like you can see it will depend on the year if they are the same or not.:D But I think the older CRX is faster because it´s much lighter than the last CRX.

See, this is what I meant, the Vtec is a system found in multiple engines (1.5l-1.6l-1.8l...), the VTi is a type of Civic, the 1.6l DOHC. You can't compare if you haven't got the engine size for the Vtec...

VTEC-E is economy- like it was already mentioned!
Sure there are 1.5 VTEC engines (hehe ive got one)
Civic EX/ 1.5VTi: D15B3 3-stage VTEC 130bhp
Civic EX/ 1.5VEi: D15Z8 2-stage VTEC-Lev engine 115 bhp[EU version of thD15B3- dunno why theyre using thisone instead of the b3]
Civic VX/1.5 : D15Z3...6 2-stage VTEC-E engine 90...105 bhp
-all the newer ones with 1.5 engines are VTEC. The most advanced is the 1.5VTiused on the current us Civic version. It has a 3-stage VTEC engine designed for high power and economy. This is the most advanced VTEC implementation before iVTEC!
The DOHC VTEC implementations are just designed for power while the SOHC implementations are designed for more street-usable cars with a not- so high fuel consumption.

But if you´re going to swap an engine there will be some other things you´ll have to change, too. Like brakes, ECU, tranny, tacho,......and maybe even the radiator (?)!

civic_1.6_16v a CRX DOHC engine will fit your car pretty easy. The only things you'll need are the the engine( ) and the ECU of the CRX.
VTEC it's going to be more expensive. The B16A won't fit the stock engine mounts and IMO isn't worth the money for the swap. For the money you will spend you can buy a VT with a B16A stock.
I've been there, I've considered an engine swap in my old DX but came to the conclusion that in Europe where those engines are available in stock models swapping isn't worth it in a 88-91 Civic. Unless you are going for the "ZC" 1.6L DOHC non vtec, if you can find a totaled rex that swap can be worthwhile.

And if you can live with an old Civic it isn't that expensive.
I have had my VTEC for two weeks now but I just came back from a skiing trip so I wasn't able to drive it for a week. Even though a holiday is always nice I missed my car :D
But while I was away I left the car at the dealer for the week so they could fix all the little things that were wrong with it (3 months full warranty, I left them a nice little list :D )

But what do you consider a little list??? ;)
But while I was away I left the car at the dealer for the week so they could fix all the little things that were wrong with it (3 months full warranty, I left them a nice little list :D )
A little list????

Well this was the list:
Damn I don't know all the English words for this..
right "homokineet" was bad (click click click noise in corners)
heat "schildjes" in the exhaust were bad. (annoying metal on metal sound at 3000rpm)
Left door wasn't completely "in line"
rear wiper didn't work correctly
The car needed to be "uitgelijnd"
Left power window was very sloooow
The needed to fix my radio which they broke
Maybe I forgot a few things but I believe that's it. But it's all ok now and all for free :D
Running strong again :smoker2:

That wasn't really a little list, that were quite some things they had to fix
But if they have fixed it properly and for free then you cannot complain ;)

The biggest fear I have got with my new car is that the scratches (which were caused by winter and the stupid people from dealer) won´t get away after having it polished with a machine!!! The engine hood, front spoiler and left wheel-well will be repainted so it´ll be fine with these parts of my car. But I dunno about the rest. Does anybody has got any ideas about that?

In my case (and I think it's the same with you) the scratches are in the clear coat. You can only seen them if the light hits it under a certain angle, then you can see brush strokes :( .

Yea, it´s the same with my Lude! There are a few scratches which are so deep that you can see the white of the priming but these parts are going to be repainted. supafly told me that I should get a special product of `Meguiar´s´ which could help us, too. But as far as I know we can´t get it in europe. But I´m sure that there will be a similar product for the european market.

I read your post in the exterieur forum. I already tried with Turtle wax and it helped a little bit. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to ask if I can remove them.

Actually the "homokineet" and the head"schildjes" (sorry, still don't know the words) are typical things that go bad on a 4th gen. I've had the same things with my old 1.5.
And the door wasn't really wrong mounted but there was a little bit of room in the mounting point, nothing major. And the engine isn't new, it has the original engine in it.
Off course you never now if has ever been in an accident but all the panels match up right and everything is straight so I think
I'm ok.
So it's all good, but thanks for your concern ;)

Hi,
VTEC is a technology term and VTi a class with in a model and they are not the same.
For exemple, you have a lot of VTEC engines (civic 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0) both SOHC and DOHC. On the model line upt only the DOHC VTEC are called VTi. All the DOHC VTEC engines make something like 100 bhp per litre while all the other ones make much less then that.
Kind regards,

After installed the CAI the biggest diference I felt was on the noise section :D (specially above 4.000 and with WOT its a very deep resonance inside the car), after the VTEC kicks in (+-5600) it's so race alike that I became addicted :D.
The biggest diference you may feel is on the exhaust and specially the cat. The engine revs much faster and its a missile untill reaching the redline. Using the mid section like I do (JDM Type-R spec.) it makes a high pitch noise near 3.000 and after 6.000 (but in this section the cai is louder :D).
I'm going to test it with a N1 muffler during the next week end on a track day but I guess I have to use big cotton balls on my ears :D :D.
