running rich

i have a 2 gen tsi and when its floored its blows a bit of black smoke out the exhaust. a friend told me that its cuz its runnin rich. its this a prob? is there a way to fix this? i read an article that said there is a screw under the intake by the mas that u can screw out to alow more air flow, will this work?
