Ok I need serious help. I have owened a eclipse gs-t and a talon tsi, and I have always used 93 or higher octane. If I used anything else my car ran like poop. So I am dating this girl now with a 03 1.8t, and she runs 87. Tell me if this right wich I know it's not, and how I can explain it to her in lamest terms

in the manual it says how it is recommended to use the 93, i have an 03' 1.8t as well. I would never put anything less than 93 in my baby.

I wasn't sure if it was in the manual. Now I am going to look it up. Thanks again.

Whoa! Unless your car is chipped and can specifically run on lower octane gas, dont' go below 93. Having a turbo on the car means it has to have premium fuel to run efficiantly. Just as you wouldn't put 87 into a diesel engine dont' put 87 into a car that needs 93. Putting in 87 the car isn't burning the fuel properly. Decreased gas mileage, idleing louder and other problems can.... will most likely occur. 87 Doesn't detonate in the engine properly. Switch to 93 immidiately and you may want to take it to a mechanic to insure the car is in fine working order. VW wouldn't require you to put in the expensive fuel unless it was required.

well if she's selling the car in like 3 years, then okay

I mean, who cares about the next guy who gets the car?

Ummm man tell you g/f not to be a moron and put alteast 91 in the car. Hmmmm my mechanics have replaced enough 1.8T motors in the past year alone to know that they are trick and finicky with what gas they get. Hell if it lasts longer than one more year on 87 octane I will be surprised.

just to go against everyone....

on the back of the gas cap there's a sticker that says that the minimum octane rating 1.8t's can handle is 87.

and california doesn't have 93 octane, we only get 91. does that mean we cant drive vws?

You can run 87 all you want. You see... Modern cars have this magical thing called a knock sensor. Read up.

amen

also, octane ratings dont determine the quality of fuel, its just a ratio of the octane vs. some other organic molecule in the fuel. octane determines how much the fuel can be compressed until it detonates.
