Starter Sticking

I have an '01 LS 3.1, when i start it, once in a while the starter sticks and it acts like u are holding the key after it starts. The starter makes that horrible screech. The dealership said "unable to dupicate problem." It is getting progressively worse. I guess they are going to fix it when it breaks all together and I am stranded somewhere. Anyone else experiencing this?

I am starting to notice that it only does it ona cold-start. And only on the first try. After it starts and the starter makes that sound, you can turn the car off and try it again it works fine, anyone else experincing this?

VERY Interesting! I am starting to experience the exact same problem on my 2001 Malibu. I am thinking that it is the starter that is beginning to go out, but as you stated it only happens on the first cold start of the morning. I am noticing it more and more as the weather gets colder.

What ever happened in your case? I was thinking of taking it to the dealership (I have the 75,000 mile extended warranty with $50 deductible) however I don't want to pay the dealership diagnostic fees--just to find that they "can not duplicate the problem."

How common is it for the starter to go out (with 56,000 miles on the car?)

take it to the dealer the night before on a cold night then go in the morning and hope it screws up.
just leave it parked out side after the close.

Well I still have the problem. The dealership said leave the car there for 3 days so that we can diagnose the problem for the starter and A/C control panel that decides when it wants outside air. BUT, I have to pay for my rental those 3 days because warranty says that they don't pay for a rental untill they diagnose the problem. So I have been thinking about just killing the starter so that they will have no choice but give me a new one. Maybe hold the key and give it gas!Let me know if you find out where the problem is. Or if you have any luck.

when this happens does the voltage still being drawn down Ie lights cut out , voltmeter low. If it is it is a elec problem if not the gear is just stuck foreward on the starter

I'll have to check next time I start it cold. In my case I THINK it is the former that when this happens the voltage goes low, lights are dim, etc. I'll pay more attention next time this happens.

It seems to have a little problem starting, I thought at first perhaps I was just holding the key to "start" for too long. However today I checked the battery terminals, made sure the fuel filter had been changed recently, etc. I can't think of any other fuel/ air/ electrical problems that would be causing a rough start.

BTW, if I remember right the timing does not need to be adjusted on this vehicle? I'll check the battery soon as it has been in the car now for 4-years of service (original battery).

In my case, the car starts fine but it grinds the starter when the engine starts. The ignition is fine, it isn't sticking. The car has a new battery. When it is cold outside is when it does it. I live in Texas but the car came from Michigan. Don't know if that has anything to do with it. The lights don't dim. Not sure why it does it only when it is cool or cold outside. It is an '01 V6 with about 58,000 miles on it. Hoping that it is just a bad starter and that it will eventaully kill it self or the flywheel so I can get a new one while it is still under warranty.
