Internal Engine Clean-up

I have aa '91 camry with a 2.0 4 cyl.
I have a "ticking" coming from the valve train.
When I took off the valve cover to check the valve clearance I was un-plesently surprised to see tons of "Crap" all over the inside of the valve train!
The clearance's were all fine, and I did what I could to clean some of the "crap" out but there is too much.
Has anyone used a "Motor Medic" type internal engine cleaner?
How were the results? What brand did you use.
How about the old Kerosene and oil trick?

Notice that you may still have to replace the valve covers and oil pick-up if the problem is bad enough.

Also, using this or any cleaner on a high-mileage engine is chancy.
