valve seals

hey guys i am out here in nj, i took my car to the dealer they told me that my valve seals are leaking that's way my car is burning oil.... yes my car is burning oil and have white smoke sometimes with a little odor....they it will tak 12 hours and cost $1100 dollars. is this a hard job to do, can i do it my self..... the seals are like a $100......help please the head gasket is ok, the pan seal is not leaking i replace the valve cover seals.... help...

ouch... $1100 dollars is a fuckin lot! what model is your car? it can be a bitch if you dont have the right tools. and its a lot easier with the head off but it can be done with the head in the car i believe (the spring compressors that i have seen to use with the DOHC head in the car do not work on our cars because the room to work with is too small) there could be a different one that i have no clue about but the ones around here definatly dont work, i have a big ass C-Clamp compressor that has to be used while the head is out of the car, if thats the case with the dealer then thats why it costs so much~ check into it, see if they have to remove the head to do it

and if anyone knows about the spring compressors (kevin, or anyone else that does a good bit of engine work) that can be used with our cars while the head is in the car let me know cause i will buy one asap if there is one available~

shit! mine burns oil too ... wtf i'm never going to pay that much. Mine is blue smoke.

If you do it with the head on, make sure the valves dont fall in the cylinders lol. That would make it a whole lot harder to get the seals out, with the valves still in also.

I used the c-clamp style with a deep socket to get the springs out. But for putting them back in my dad had to use the machanics tool from work. I dont know what it was.

You should be able to rent the tools from any automotive store. Its not that hard to do, i wouldent pay $1,100 unless i was a woman who knew nothing about cars. :smile:

well if you do it with the head off then yes you can easily get at the pistons, but you need to disconnect the connecting rods from the crank and pop the pistons out the top... as for the question about the other seals... you can change your cam seals, head gasket, exhaust gasket, intake manifold gasket, valve cover and spark plug cylinder seals all while that is being done!
