Speedometer troubles 93 century

I have a 93 buick century and the other day the speedometer stopped working. I checked all the fuses and they are fine. Service engine light stays on and I am unable to get a code out of the EMC. When I drive I get a funny smell.
According to a friend it may be a pressure hose. I should also mention that the Cruise control doesn't work.
Can anyone please tell me where to look for the trouble.

Sounds like the vss (Vehicle speed sensor).I would get a haynes manual or look online for location.
