Hey, I'm looking into getting a 94'-96' base or SL 3000GT. I'm probly not going to add any goodies under the hood cept maybe a cold air intake. My question is how much would insurence be for a 17 yr old on this car? My parents have safeco and driving records are so so. I'd be under their insurence for this one... anyone here know prices? thanks!

It all depends on where you live, how long you've been driving, your record, etc etc. I'm under SafeCo as well and I pay about $700+ every 6 months--and that's will a buttload of discounts. But for you, I'd probably say it'll be about $1000 or so because you're younger. You could always call for a quote. It's free since your parents are with them already.

Hmm what kind of discounts do you think I'd be eligable for? Do you know any off hand, like is there a good driver discount?

ya, i called up the good ole insurance people one day. The amount we pay for the 3000GTs or for any car is based on the 'rating' or so they call it. I was looking into selling my 93 3000GT base (manual, 60k miles) and getting a 94 Camaro Z28 (5.7L V8 with headers, 75 shot of NOS, and a bunch of mods) and it would be cheaper to insure the Camaro than the 3000GT. I was like wha???
The insurance lady told me the 'rating' is based on factors like: foreign or domestic, availability of parts, pricing of parts, crash-worthyness, etc. etc. So i think always the foreign cars will be more expensive to insure than the domestics b/c the parts cost more and they're not as easy to find as the domestic parts.
ALSO, any mitsu owner knows how hard it is to work on our freakin engines! There is next to ZERO space in the engine compartment, with the DOHC setup the timing belt is a pain. Compare that to a SOHC Camaro with just a serpentine belt in the front with plenty of room to work.
But i could never part with my 3000GT. They look sooo sweet.

Agreed! Although I have to sell mine now because I want a VR4 and I don't "need" it during school since I no longer have a long distance girlfriend.

Welcome to AF, being that you are new, you probably don't know, but there is a search function available on this forum. You should do a search, as this ? has been addressed hundreds of times in this forum alone. There are plenty of discounts and other good advice in the other threads regarding this issue, but nobody other than your insurance provider will be able to offer you an accurate quote.

Yeah, there's good student discount, multi-car discount (depending on how many cars are insured), anti-theft (just get an alarm but if you get an SL, you should have a factory one already), and distant student. Those are the only ones I could remember off the top of my head.
And osok_deadeye_21, yeah, what you're paying is expensive but I think it's also because you're with a more well known company. Like we were with Farmers at one time and they f*cking charged the living hell out of us. I was driving an '86 Supra and paying I think $1200+ every six months for liability only--with a CLEAN record too. So yeah, try someone else...I think at least....

yeah it is bs since they said it was going to be 900 every 6 months but then i get a letter in the mail saying that they messed up on my policy and i owe them 100 bucks. its like is that my fualt??? Anyways as soon as my policy ends i am going somewhere else plus i am getting a 1st gen 3kgt and it will be cheaper.

Na man, it doesn't sounds like BS. When i was 16, i had a 96 Camry and the insurance was 800 every 6 months. I do live in Texas, but i'm pretty sure the rates are always high like that for 16 yr old males. Males don't get a significant price break until we're 25...sux don't it? Girls get a price break around 21. Weird huh?
But no matter what insurance agency you're with, the rates will be pretty high for a high performance sports car like a 3000GT. But do shop around and get quotes. Good luck

Thanks for the Help guys, and yes Igovert500 , I tried the search thingy but it didn't come up with ne topics? I duno I prolly did somthin wrong, but thanks for the help guys. Hey do ne of you think I could take a base and replace the Front Wheel Drive Trans with an All Wheel Drive Trans from a VR-4?
StealthModifier

You would probably have to put power to the rear wheels
Linebckr49
08-19-2004, 03:02 PM
it IS possible to put an AWD tranny onto a base model GT, but NOT recommendable. As StealthModifier said, you would have to put power to the rear wheels, meaning a rear drive shaft and rear end from a VR4. Plus, since you're transferring power to the rear wheels, your overall hp will drop dramatically since you lose torque over distance. That's why they turbocharge the VR4.
But if you didn't add power to the rear wheels, you might just end up with some open ended parts from the AWD tranny extending to the rear.
Heck, check it out.
BUT take a look at the gear ratios for the 5spd and the 6spd trannys.
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/1238945spd_gear_ratios.JPG
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/1238946spd_gear_ratios.JPG
So the 6spd AWD tranny offers a 3.266:1 ratio compared to the 3.090:1 ratio of the 5spd FWD tranny. So ideally you should get off the line a bit faster.
Its a good idea to do the tranny swap, but ask around to see what others think. If it worked, not only would you get off the line a bit quicker, but that 6th gear would give you a little better gas mileage. Of course some might say all that trouble to swap trannys is not worth it... and you're better off just getting a VR4...

I mean the GT's gonna be somewhat of a commuter car, I may race it sometimes, but only with my bud's for small cash or somthin. hmm, what else do you guys think? I really appreciate the help!

Looks like this post was made for me :)
I am an insurance agent. The "rating" that the insurance lady was talking about was the vehicle's "Symbol". Every car has a symbol. It goes from 1-9, and then A-Z. The closer to 1 the symbol, the less expensive the car will be to insure, the closer to Z, the more expensive (except for liability only cars....liability insurance is the same no matter what car you drive. get a quote for a 1990 honda civic liability only and a 2003 lexus liability only and it's the same rate).
The first get VR4's symbol is an S, and the 2nd gen VR's are a symbol V. MOST cars don't get symbols that high, except for high end luxury cars, haha.
So yes, the Camaro will be less expensive than the 3000GT due to the symbol of the Camaro being more to the left than the 3000GT.
Also, being a <25 male with a sports car is the worst thing you can do, you are getting triple dinged, lol.
However, at ages 19, 21, 23, 25, you will get a break in your rates. Make sure to keep a good driving record or it will keep going up if you get tickets.
Always always always let them know about modifications. Why? cuz if you do, they can insure them if something happens to your car, but if you don't, and you have a claim, they have every right to deny your claim, causing you to 1) have a busted car, and 2) could be liable for the other person's injuries, which could easily be hundreds of thousands of dollars. The thing is, is if you have quite a few performance modifications, they might not want to insure the car since all the customizations.
You would get the best rates by adding your car to your parents policy, because 1) you get the multi car discount 2) they are probably getting preferred rates, so your rate will be lower.
I live in Iowa, so thankfully my insurance is damn cheap. I'm 24 years old, male, and have 1 careless driving ticket on my record. I insure 2 cars, and total premium for both vehicles is $705 for 6 months.

Hmmm, hey check this out my parents want to insure me on there 1990 Dodge Caravan, it's a freakin' minivan, we have more than one car, more than one driver, my parent's driving records are pretty good, they pay 987 for 6 mon. When I asked for a quote as to me gettin' put on the insurence (I'm a 17 yr old male with a spotless record) they said the premium would increase to 2,500 for 6 months.

I pay $4,000/ year for my 95' 3kgt SL, i live in NJ and that's a rip off .... i can afford it and all, but i think that's what i should be paying for a VR4, not an SL. Newark, New Jersey, car theft capital of the nation. Four of my friends got their cars stolen within the course of only 7months, all hondas and 2 of them were found in Newark. Idk i guess one of the reasons why auto insurance is so damn high here, theft. I heard New Jersey is getting Geico tho! :D Almost every insurance company excludes jersey ..... i'm switchin over to geico as soon as they start service here! lol as well as millions of other ppl :)

Lol, I was surprised how low mine was, I pay around 2500/year I think and I'm 19, male, live near Boston. But the Insurance rates are fixed by the state so geico and others stay away anyways lol. Nitro I was jsut driving through Jersy on the turnpike a week ago, you have some god awful trafic down there, it was like 10:00 and the wait for the george washington bridge was over an hour, I was like :eek7:, since when is there traffic after 7! I need to call my insurance company and tell them that I'm selling the car.... what would happen if I jsut stopped paying? Will they blacklist me or something lol?
And Nitro, you'll have no troubel finding a race down there, I saw alot of riced out cars and stangs and shit, to bad I was in my ex's camry wagon.

Yes MA and NJ insurance laws have been shittfy for a long time, that's why most insurance companies don't write business there, but NJ changed their laws, so the insurance companies will slowly come back.
