I am about to buy a 1997 Toyota 4 runner V6, 4x4, with 104K. I was wondering if anyone knows when the timing belt should be replaced? I don't know if it has alrerady been done, or if it needs to be done soon? I know most cars, it should be replaced around 60-70k. I would appreciate any advice.

Gates says to replace the timing belt every 90k unless your truck is operated under severe-use conditions. Then every 60k. Toyota recommends every 60K. Note that Gates has 90K as severe-use change interval on newer 4Runners with the 3.4L V6.

I think the 97 fwd has a timing chain (vs. a belt). I've also seen various guidance indicating replacement at 75k miles with water pump replacement. I did mine at 90k miles and will probably maintain that interval unless the engine indicates otherwise.

The '97 3.4L V6 has a timing belt, as do all the 5VZ-FE 3.4L V6 engines.
