ok, I need some advice here. My wife has a 97 v6 standard with about 140k. I was driving the other day and felt it slipping so we brought it to the stealership to have it checked out. It needed an alignment at the same time so we just figured what the heck do that too. So anyway the next day the service dept calls to let us know about the problems. Oh and there are many of them.
She says we need a new clutch, new sway bars, new brakes, rotars, and pads up front, read shoes and drums, the rear emergency brake is seized up so that needs to be replaced, and the rear catch hanger is desintegrated. On top of that they said the tires need to be replaced before we do an alignment. The grand total of what needs to be done comes to about $3700.
What would you do? We are thinking about just getting a new car. We were thinking about it anyway next summer when my tacoma payments are up. Or we could take it to a local mechanic and have them take a look to see if all of that stuff really does need to be fixed, and get a estimate about how much that would cost with them.
Any thoughts?

Get a second opinion. Don't tell the different mechanic anything about what the dealer said. Just ask him to check your clutch (tell him it's slipping), tires, brakes, and adjust your emergency brake. There is some questionable problems listed. Most notably the sway bars. I hope they meant that you needed new bushings which is a trival job. Sway bars are torsion bars. They don't wear out.
If you don't hear the wear indicators, there is a question as to whether you really need brakes also. You can get the alignment done anytime.

Thanks for the input Brian, but I should have asked sooner, my wife was a bit more impatient then I decided we should go over to the dealership and check out new/used cars and ended up buying a 2003 limited v6 fully loaded for a pretty good deal, and with a bunch down and the trade in we have very reasonable payments. We almost paid off my truck, but figured it would not be worth it because all I am paying now is the principle, and if I did it I woudl save about 100 bucks over 11 months and its just not worth it.
So the good news, we have a really sweat 2003, and the bad news I don't get to drive it very often.
