Coming home from an interview in Louisville today, a VW GTI 1.8T, me, and a G35x were all running together. Got into it with the G35x. Thing was brand new...window sticker and all. He was just baaaaaaaaaaaaarely pulling on me at 120...probably wouldn't have happened if he hadn't gotten a little jump on me (missed 5th) and it SURELY wouldn't have happened if I had a boost controller (damn my measley 4psi...). The VW didn't even try...which might have been wise. G35x is pretty quick for it's size.

G35X sedan... sigh... an AWD/ATTESSA powered beauty! I have yet to see one on the streets! No offense LLtZ... but I'm surprised he did not slaughter you. What kinda mods you got?

hmmm, a four-door awd g35. the heaviest of the bunch (g35's). i really am not suprised he didn't beat you that bad. lets think about it here. a z31 turbo is a little bit faster than a z32 n/a and slower than a z32 TT, okay, a 350z is a little bit faster than the g35 coupe, and the z32 is a little bit faster than the 350z, so that means that the z32 tt is faster than the g35 COUPE with the z31 turbo is a little bit slower than the z32 tt, so after all that, the z31 turbo should be almost as fast as the g35x. hope you guys can understand that.

Anyway this is what Freak meant:

Fastest

1. Z32TT
2. 350Z
3. G35 Coupe
4. Z31T-G35x
5. Z32NA

Slowest

More or less. This guy is snortin blocks.

I'm not buyin' it... sorry... not to dis or anything... I believe the story... but LLtZ just purchased this vehicle not too long ago... am I correct here? He has an '86 Turbo, huh? Used... same engine too I bet. Unless LLtZ or the previous owner (and once again I bet not) rebuilt this engine to like or new condition. Good chance that motor is a little tired and not up to par with a brand spanking new G35x. Get my drift? I bet if the G35x was really playing ball... the little Z31 would get axed! Once again... no disrespect. I dunno... And YES I understand the whole concept of 'fastest to slowest' and I understand Power to Weight Ratio's... Any how. I would like to see that race in person. I would not really call what LLtZ mentioned a true race any way...

The G35x is a big boy...almost 3700 lbs. But...It has ~50 hp on me (260 vs. ~210-ish). Moderate power advantage...quite a bit more weight...little jump on the gas...what's the problem? Sounds about right to me. We were going about 130 when we caught up to slower traffic. Not sure exactly...didn't want to look, but it was the fastest I've ever been in a car before. I hit the brakes to keep from driving up his ass when we caught the other traffic and I could smell the brakes burning up. We both looked at each other and both of us knew what was going on. He seemed to be taking it from one dealership to another or something...window sticker...dealer tags...etc. so he wanted to play with it some. I don't know if it was an AT or MT.

My car has a 9" K&N cone filter and a "poor man's high flow exhaust" right now. Probably good for another 5-10hp or something like that. And no, it hasn't been rebuilt or anything to my knowledge, but it hasn't been driven a terrible amount, either...anyway, my car runs great.

The way my car is now...a 2 door G35 would kick my ass pretty hard. A 350Z...bye bye. But the hefty G35x...I can (did) run with that pretty well. Just wish he hadn't gotten a jump on me. The tables will turn when I get a boost controller and a real exhaust system on it...however...the exhaust that's on it now probably flows pretty damn well...IT'S HALF GONE...

What I meant was... the story will most likely be a tad different if you both start at the line. You cannot tell much by 'going at it' when you are already at 70mph+. I'm assuming you were on the freeway heading home?

Oh and I beilieve that the G35x Sedan may be the only G35 Sedan with MT. I could have my facts screwed up here... it would not surprise me if they only came in AT.

longlivetheZ
08-18-2004, 03:41 PM
Yea...I was on my way home and we (me, the GTI, and the G35x) were all cruising along at about 90 for a looooooong time. Finally, the temptation was a little too much for me and the G35. The GTI got into the right lane and slowed to about 85-ish, but the G35 (who was in front of me in the left lane) and I kept on at 90, accelerating slowly. I downshifted to 4th cuz I knew we were gunna go...and we did. At first, it was even, but I missed fifth gear which gave him a split second on me.

Did a bunch more research...JBCarpages.com gives the RWD model a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds with the AT. Also read about the AWD model on CarandDriver.com and they said that you CAN get the AWD with an MT...but if you go to Infiniti's site and do the "build and locate" thing, there is no option for an MT on the AWD model...dunno what C&D was talking about. I'd imagine that the AWD model would probably be around 6.4-6.7 on a dash to 60 due to the large weight addition over the RWD model...in other words, a few ticks slower, but not really noticable. For those of you thinking "oh..well...the AWD would be faster because of the AWD traction", compare the 300ZXTT and it's nearly identical twin, the 3000GT VR4...veeeeeeeeeery similar cars...one has AWD and one doesnt...the same 0-60 (a tenth of a second...whatever...)...added traction at the sacrifice of lots of added weight isn't always the best thing.

For those of you questioning me, like I KNOW you are...here's the article I refer to:
Page 1 (http://www.aus300zxclub.com/magazine/a12p4.jpg)
Page 2 (http://www.aus300zxclub.com/magazine/a12p5.jpg)
Page 3 (http://www.aus300zxclub.com/magazine/a12p6.jpg)
Page 4 (http://www.aus300zxclub.com/magazine/a12p7.jpg)
Page 5 (http://www.aus300zxclub.com/magazine/a12p8.jpg)
Imagine if the VR4 weighed as much as the Z32TT...that nearly 450 lbs surely doesn't help the VR4. Another example of what I'm trying to get across is the RX-7 in that article...it's the fastest of the bunch...but it's only RWD...but it's by FAR the lightest. I'll take a 2000lb, 400hp, rwd car over a 4000lb, 400hp, awd car any day.

A stoplight race would be one hell of a race for me right now. I wish I had run into this guy around town...would have been fun.

not many 350z/g35 guys like us z32 guys. i don't know why, but it seems for some reason that most of them think they are above us. it is hard to get a 350z to wave back at me.

Thats probably because they got their shiny new asses handed to them by a Z32 TT. Aftershelling out $30k for the 350Z and $100 for some much needed Viagra, they still can't cut it. That must burn. Bad.

Ha. From personal experience, no one is worse than Corvette guys...most of the time even Porsche guys will wave or flash their high beams or bullshit about cars long before Corvette guys will. From what I've seen, most Z people tend to stick together regardless of generation.

That same day I went to that interview (I got that job, too...), I was across the street from the place killing time before the interview cuz I was way early. How convienient is it that there was not only one, but two performance auto parts stores right across the street from where I was for the interview? I was leaving one of the places and some guy came out and offered to buy my car (of which got him a prompt but polite "uh...no"). Said he has a 350Z now and he's had 3 or 4 other Z cars.

Anyone else ever driven a powered up Eclipse? You'd better have the club to lock the wheel straight or an LSD to keep em both pullin because it will torque steer right off the road.

longlivetheZ
08-27-2004, 12:22 AM
I hate torque steer. That's the worst...it's also the reason I'll NEVER own a FWD car for the sole intent of aggressive driving.

It wasn't the best conditions for racing...he was in front, cuz he was in front of me at the light. Light turned green, we both turned left and as soon as we were going straight, we gunned it, neither of us pulled on the other enough to be intelligable by the human eye...it was seriously the closest race I've ever been in. If we had started off nose to nose, it would have come down to the driver, 100%...who ever got the better launch and could change gears the fastest would have won.

I used to have a 91 Eclipse GS-T. Wheel hop and torque steer out the ASS. It was quick car though, but after having the RX-7 I needed something RWD.

And freakonaleash you should race one to see who's faster. I have the lightest model N/A Z and I cant even tell if its faster than my old eclipse

LLZ Quick comment you actually could be loosing power off the open exhaust my theroy is as follows. True turbo car's do not rely on back pressure in fact thrive on open exhaust for the most part. But considering the turbo's in our cars being made by garret and having internal wastegates the fact that there is no back pressure at all to help aid in closing the waste gate and keeping it closed your loosing presious spool RPM's and overal peak boost. Also I have noticed that on cars with turbo back free flowing exhsut when they being to smoke because of "turbo failure" re-instalation of the main cats gets rid of the smokeing. Why? Because the back pressure also helps aid in keeping the seals sealed so to speak. Just a though in no way meant to be mean or anything just thinking out loud gaining others persepctives...

longlivetheZ
08-27-2004, 02:39 PM
No prob, man...I like people's input...I just hate when people are like..."nuh uh!!!" for no reason...

I should clarify, though. My WHOLE exhaust isn't gone. MOST of it is, but the cat and part of the mid pip is there, I think...never really looked too carefully. This could be why my car doesn't boost as high as it should all the time. Sometimes it only gets to ~3psi as opposed to the 5 it's suppoest to get. I thought it could be the gauge, but that little bit is quite noticable...feels like that extra little kick in the pants is missing. I ordered a boost gauge that's marked in PSI as opposed to the horridly vague stock boost gauge that's not only sparsly marked, but marked in mmHg. This will give me a good meter to see if I actually am losing boost or not. Plus, I ordered a boost controller (which might be here today, actually....ha ha ha...) and that will help a lot.

But...bottom line...I do need to get a real 3" exhaust on it. I had planned on getting a custom system, and it would be done already, but I found out the place I was planning on taking it to for the job doesn't use mandrel bent pipes...so I guess I have to order a kit or find somewhere else to do it. I'm workin on it.

Really thought these (http://images.autotrader.com/images/2004/3/24/160/124/790985858.160124669.IM1.MAIN.565x421_A) were faster than they are...you know...being a V12 and all.

One was next to me while I was getting gas today. Nice cars. Noticed him coming up behind me after I got on the freeway. Kinda seemed like he wasn't sure if he wanted to play or not...like he was scared to or something. We'd be going 65 and stomp it to 80, then drop back down to 70, then mash it again to 85 and so on...all I was doing was just not letting him pull on me. He'd go from one lane to the other like that would help and he just could NOT pass me...couldn't even gain ground. I was just cruisin along in 5th the whole time...didn't even have to downshift. Finally I guess he said screw it and decided to go for it. I ended up hitting about 110 as he got smaller and smaller in my mirror. I love that. And it's going to be even more fun soon cuz I'm installing my boost controller and boost gauge tomorrow...
