detonation

Hi guys. ive just advanced my timing and just want to know whats the best way to check for detonation. I only hear a little bit of knocking but its only when im in 5th gear doing bout 50kmh and its only for a second or two. is this normal or should i retard it a bit. one more thing. sometimes when my car is hot the revs kind of race a bit at idle. drop fast then pick up a bit. i think they call it dive bombing or something. does anyone know how o fix this

Definitely retard the timing a bit more. Do not tolerate any knocking.
