Cam position sensor

How do I test a Cam position sensor for a 2003 Passat 1.8t AWM?
Warning light is on ,checked codes, indicates cam position sensor. I have checked the timing chain for cams, and all t-belt timing marks are correct. Let me know BOSCHMAN

Hello again!
I'm back with a new problem.I'm not sure anymore about keeping my 99 passat.
Yesterday I was driving on the highway (about 70 miles/hour) and suddenly the engine died.I have a cheap scanner (innova 3100) and I pulled this code code:P1338(CMP Sensor Bank 1 Open Circuit Or Short To B+ ).The car doesn't start anymore,i supose there is some protection now from the computer.
Does anybody has any clue about this problem.I really don't want to go to VW to fix it.At least I would like first to understand what is going on.
I would really appreciatte any help.

The sensor might be unplugged. If it isnt the sensor needs to be replaced, which isnt too hard, just 2 bolts after taking the cam cover off.

thanks for your fast answer.
I decided today to start working on it.It looks like a mess.
I measured the outer two pins from the harness connector:5 Volts.
I opended the timing belt cover:At least 10 teeth are missing.This smells like trouble.
How can I figure if anything is damaged in the engine?As I know,this is not a Non-Interference engine,so I'm afraid something might damaged inside.
The funny thing is that I had the timing belt for few months now but i didn't replace it.
Do you have any advices before I open the engine?
