How much oil?

Hey...as some of you know i have a 95 3000GT base. I changed the oil about 1000 miles ago. I put a little heavier oil in hoping that it would stop making my oil pressure gauge go down even tho i knew i had pressure and everything was fine...but it scares me for about 2 secends when i look over and see that my oil pressure is down to nothing. So like i said...i put a heavier oil in. But now my lifters are ticking alot louder then they did before a changed the oil. So i'm going to change back to a lighter oil a see what happens. But my question is how much oil does it need? I forgot what i put in last time. And when i changed it last time i didn't know how much i needed in the first place...i just guessed. I looked at stealth316.com and i couldn't find anything there...witch i think is odd. But i would think one of you would know (i would hope anyways)...so if you could help me out that would be great. Thanks!

I'm looking into changing my oil in the next few days, what do I need in terms of tools? What weight oil should I use? Ahd how the F#&$ do I get under the car!

Thourun.. all u need is an adjastable wrench to unscrew the screw in the oil pan.. and just jack up the car on the passenger side... and what i used in my car was Castrol GTX 10W-30.. not sure if thats what they call for.. but i think it is...not sure how many quarts either

Does anyone know the part number of the oil filter and if it is 10W-30?

youngmanvr4
08-16-2004, 11:48 PM
Thats what i'm useing now and thats what the new oil is too. Only i put 20W-50 last time i because the ports that are less then 1mm in the lifter its too heavy of a oil to run in thos little ports. The new oil i'm going to put in is 10W-30. If i were you i would get a new filter. I have ramps (two of them) that i used to get the car up. When i say ramps i mean metel ones like you would see a wal-mart. I'm going to get a two post 10,000 pound lift sometime...so that will be nice to have when i'm working under the car.

No one knows how many quarts need to go in?

Go to ur local automotive store.. im sure they have oil filters there.. as well as a book to look up the number.. i think each brand has a different number for them

Yea thats what I was gonna do, anyone know of a site that has a walk through with pics? I've never changed oil before but it sounds realy simple, I've been able to do everything else so far. I'm going to go back to autozone tomorrow and get some oil and a filter.

Thourun: http://www.team3s.com/FAQoilchange.htm No pics but it's a walkthrough. :o/

Stealth, jack up the car on the passenger side? Isn't the oil pan on the driver side? Do you let it back down while it's draining? I usually have the whole car on some type of stand but it gets so time consuming sometimes to just change the oil. Ugh!

fram part number for the oil filter is PH6811, if you need part number for another make let me know.

you need a fraction under a gallon of oil i.e 4.3 litres up to you what viscosity you use , i prefer 15/40 semi synthetic but thats just my opinion

hope this helps

ur supposed to fill ur car with about 3 - 4 quarts of oil, after putting on the new filter, then let the car run for 30 seconds to get the oil flowing, then shut off the car, measure how much is on the dipstick. most likely 3 quarts wont be enough i think last time i used close to 4 and a half. but then u just keep measuring with the dipstick till u have enough

Thourun, i just got back from changing my oil. I put in 4 quarts on the dot. I have a Fram Double Guard oil filter and the part numbers on it is (well it has two numbers) the first is DG3593A thats the one i think you need. The other one is A33071. Look for thos two or just ask someone there...or if they have a book there just look it up. If i where you i would use the double guard oil filter. I think it filters alot better. To get the bolt off to drain the oil the bolt size is 11/16...i use a 1/2 inch drive (easier to get off). One thing i like to before putting the new filter on i like to fill the filter almost all the way up. Its just something i learned from my dad. But do make sure you oil around the top of the filter...if you dont...well...we just wont go there. I think thats it. Good luck.

Hey dsm97, did you check the oil pressure guage now? is it fixed?

Thourun
08-17-2004, 08:18 PM
The biggest hurdle is how to get the car up safely, I could use a jack or two but I would rather have ramps but where am I going to get those for cheap lol. I think I might just jack it up on both sides and reinforce with cinderblocks. Where is the most secure place to put the Jack? I know not on the sideskirt lol!

StealthModifier
08-17-2004, 09:17 PM
sLADe781.. i meant jack it up on the drivers side.. i was thinkin of the transmission for some odd reason :( .. but about putting 3-4 quarts in and lettin it run for 30 mins isnt a good idea.. cuz once u turn it off ull have to wait a few hours for the oil to drain down so u can see exactly how much oil u have.. i say just put 4 quarts in and let it sit there for about 5 mins or so.. then check the dipstick.. i wanna say i put 5 in mine... but im not really sure.. also when u put in a new oil filter.. fill it up with the oil u are going to use first before putting it back on

StealthModifier
08-17-2004, 09:22 PM
Thourun, i jack mine up inside of the sideskirt.. where that metal lip comes down

Thourun
08-17-2004, 09:41 PM
Heh ok, have you used two jacks or is one fine? I'm a thin guy (130lbs @ 5'11") but squezeing in under there would be pushing it lol.

StealthModifier
08-17-2004, 10:09 PM
yea, u must be really thin.. im pretty skinny an im 6' 165lbs. :) but im sure one will do.. just make sure u got the jack locked..dont want a 4300 lb beast falling on u.. but if u dont like that.. u can jack up one side an put a jack stand under 1 of the..i dont know what its called exactly..but its this bracket that comes down that connects to the suspensions.. its rounded... but jack up the other side an put it on both..heck, u might just be able to crawl under there :) ....but the only time ive ever changed my oil was when it was 6ft. in the air..but i would say the best way is to use one jack on the drivers side an jack it up so the wheel is an inch or 2 off the ground

Thourun
08-17-2004, 10:43 PM
Yea I'm going to use the jack my dad has for his 4Runner, much nicer then the emergency one in the trunk of ours and hydrolic and much bigger!

StealthModifier
08-17-2004, 11:30 PM
yea. thats what i meant by jack.. the one for our cars wont lift it up as much as those hydrolic ones do

You guys fill the new filter before screwing it back on? Hmm....I've always just screwed it on without filling the filter. What's the advantage of filling the filter beforehand?

Thourun
08-18-2004, 02:51 AM
Man we're up late lol, I would guess it gets the oil in all the nooks and crannies of the system providing a more accurate dipstick reading.

Musashi3000GT, the ticking sound isn't is loud now but as far as oil pressure it does happen till i have been driving her for an hour or more like on the highway going somewhere. And i haven't done that yet. I'll keep you up to date on what it did.

i said 30 seconds not 30 mins. and u just line the inside edge of the filter before u screw it on. trust me im a certified lube technician lol

The reason why you fill the filter of oil before the put it on, is so that way you dont start your engine dry. The next time you change your oil...dont fill the filter before putting it on. Then start your engine up. Watch your oil pressure gauge. It will take 5 secs before it starts to show pressure...then next time fill your filter full of oil. It will show oil almost right away. What has to happen is you start the engine...the oil pump has to pump oil to the filter then from there it can go to your engine. Makes since?

BTW...i need to explan what i meant when i said my oil pressure drops. After driving around for a hour or two (getting the oil warmed up and yes i know it doesn't take that long to get your oil warmed up) then you stop at a stop light or whatever reason...and just let it idle the oil pressure will drop right above to what shows almost nothing on the gauge. I do know that you will not have as much pressure when not at a highier RPM such as 3000 rpm. But just idling it shouldn't drop that far down. So i dont know why its doing it. But i want to find out. I just wanted to let you know what i meant.

StealthModifier
08-18-2004, 06:43 PM
but why would u let the engine run for 30 seconds? that makes most of the oil go back up in the engine.. and if u have it back up in the engine.. and check an it says low or whatever.. then u would put more in, when it could already be enough.. but yal think 1 in the mornin is late? im on here mosty til 2.. sometimes til 3 :)

I went out and got 6 qrts of Mobil 1 and a new filter, what should I use to catch the oil? And once I have it all drained out what should I do with it?..... could make a big fire in the back yard :icon16:.

StealthModifier
08-19-2004, 09:01 PM
Take it to a dump or recylce place.. use an oil container thing.. i donno what its called, they sell them at auto stores .its a plastic container, with a cap that that oil drains into

Thourun
08-19-2004, 09:28 PM
lol ok, I'm having a hard time, the jack I want to use is too big and dosent fit under my car! And the jack thats suposed to come with the car isn't there.... which is annoying to say the least.

StealthModifier
08-19-2004, 09:34 PM
heck,if i were u i would just take it up to a Jiffy-Lube.. it only takes them like 5-10 mins if there not busy

Thourun
08-19-2004, 10:37 PM
Yea but I want to do shit I can do myself. Plus I'll get better oil and a better filter for the same price.

08-20-2004, 01:13 AM
Heh yea, seems to be runing a bit rough but ok, I'm gonna change it first thing tomorrow so that ends that problem. I was shocked lol good thing I was gonna change it now!

StealthModifier
08-20-2004, 01:20 AM
Yea good thing, so u finally found a jack?

Thourun
08-20-2004, 01:49 AM
heh no, but I can get it up a little with the jack at like a 75 degree angle then I'll put a cinderblock or something to hold it there so I can get the jack under.

StealthModifier
08-20-2004, 01:56 AM
do cinder blocks hold that much? u could just barrow my jack if u want to :)

Thourun
08-20-2004, 02:07 AM

Hey, the Mitsubishi Spec for oil is 20w-50 (AKA Racing Oil)...that just seems like it would be too heavy. It is a well tuned v-6 an all though. DSM, how is your 10W-30 going, any problems?

StealthModifier
08-23-2004, 11:29 PM
I have no problems wth the 10W-30 in mine :)

Thourun
08-24-2004, 03:58 AM
I just put in some mobil 1 10w 30 in mine yesterday and it runs great (alot better than with the old oil and filter lol). The only problem is it dosent work well at low temps or something.

sLADe781
08-24-2004, 10:37 AM
What do you mean it doesn't work well at low temps?

youngmanvr4
08-24-2004, 01:07 PM
So far the 10W-30 is working awesome! The lifters arn't ticking as much...and the oil pressure droping at idle hasn't happened since i changed it. So far so good.

Thourun
08-24-2004, 08:40 PM
I went to the mobile site and it said that the 10w 30 wasn't as good as it could be below 0 degrees, but i'm betting it's just fine at low temps but not up to mobile 1 standards.
