Does anyone know who makes aftermarket alternators that are more powerful. Because, I don't think my stock alternator can handle my audio system. What is a good brand? Where can I find it?

I thought Downey did but cannot find, but here's a few besides Wrangler.

Good place for just about everything:
www.performanceproducts.com
I got mine at 4 wheel parts wholesalers.
or take it to your local alternator guy and ask him to rewind it to increase amperage, although you will be down while it's being done.

How much would it cost to rewind the alt?

I'm in SoCal and the guy quouted me $75 bucks plus R&R (i think it was $35) It was quite awhile ago.But he said he used better components for the 2nd rewind than the original maker.

If I get a new alternator, would I have to change the stock electrical wires running to it? And another thing, how many stock amps does the 97' SR5 crank out?

I would definitely upgrade the wire. It is very cheap to do so. Go to an electronics shop or even a Good Guys or some store and get some premium wire that has a lot of strands. The more strands the more flexible it is and it will carry the current better.
Get some good connectors that you can crimp and solder on. Don't get the kind that the wire slip in and you hold down with a set screw, they tend to come loose.
I think stock they run 90 amps, but I could be wrong. The guy should be able to wind it up to 130 amps in the same case. The only bad thing is you will be down for a whole day.
If you are in Socal I will be glad to give names of shops and phone numbers.

Also get some heat shrink for aesthetics.

Beware it's like a garage sale inside and you will be stepping over stuff, but you can't beat the pricing.
I think some of the stuff was priced 10 years ago and they just never change it.
