Ok Here is the deal - my friend has a 91 CRX he threw some rods - so he bought a b16 vtec motor outa a 95 civic .... he had no idea on what to do so i told him i would help him - i pulled the motor myself an popped the old trans off his old engine - non vtec.... put everything on it an had to use the old injectors because the 91 crx wiring harness doesnt match the 95 off the vtec so all that was taken care of - the only prob is we got the motor in an i know i installed everything properly but we dont have the MAP sensor that goes on top of the throttle body - but the car should start even with out it - the plugs are gettin spark the injectors are gettin the fuel through - its just not starting... we almost get it started but doesnt wanna fire up.... please help - this is my first time ever doing a honda engine ..... i know my shit on cars just not hondas i have done a motor swap on my 85 daytona an done a trans change from auto to manual on my 90 daytona shelby, replaced the timing belt, theromostat, an water pump on my 93 stealth r/t twin turbo.... an had not had a single problem with any of those cars when i went to start them they all fired right up an had no problem.... so its like i am a moron - i know how to rebuild an repair an engine just havnt done a honda so i dont know much about em -an could use any ideas why its not starting..... PLEASE HELP !!! I an my friend will greatly appriciate it... oh i also removed his AC an components like he asked me to i did it correctly, cause its not the first time i was asked to remove that - an i removed his powersteering - so thats 2 things less the motor has to work to turn.... he wanted it done so i did it - but thats has nothing to do with the problem..... lol
Thanks.....

well it would be nice if you waited a little longer than 15 minutes for a reply, and it would also be nice if you information added up... theres not a b16 nonvtec that im aware of and b16s dont come from stock 5th gen civics

was it maybe a d16 that was in the crx? cuz that would cause tons of problems if you tried a b16 with d16 parts, i dont think the tranny would even hook up...

Yeah you must be talking about the d16, a b16 tranny wouldn't fit. What ECU did you use on the swap? You should be using the the one for the new engine and not the old one. You'll need to wire for vtec too check this link (might not be the right one when switching from different OBDs: http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=724252
And are you sure the previous motor was mpfi and not dpif?
And maybe if you weren't so impatient and rude you'd eventually get the info you need.

yeah sorry i am not to knowledgable of honda like i said i know i put in a b16 which is vtec.... the motor he has was just a sohc 1.6 so i dont know what that would be :sly: . but this other guy i know did a dohc 1.6 vtech in his crx from a 95 an it bolted right into the old tranny - same year 91 as my friend... plus i had no problems when i tryed bolting the tranny on it went on soon as the spline was lined up correctly... an i do have the ecu for the 95 b16 that i just put in an i have the harness... so the motor just needs the new ecu ? cause this other guy didnt change his in his crx an it worked fine the motor runs real strong an he says it seems like it just keeps gettin faster for some reason.... but ya spoon i did use the tranny outa the orig. engine outa the 91 crx an it bolted on nicely.... it turns . but is just not making the correct combustion.... so you say if i put the vtec ecu it will work >? but what about that MAP sense on the throttle body?

thanks

The b16 is dohc only, there is no sohc version. And there were never any dohc engines in '92-'95 civics (maybe it was a b16 from a del sol?). But unless the guy you know with the crx had a b-series (with a cable tranny version) swapped into his car previously, there's no way he used the same tranny. They're not interchangable between different engine series, and this would also explain why he used the old ecu with no problem. The engine you swapped in must be a d16z6. The major difference between the motors is the d16 is 125hp and the b16 is 160hp. But the ECU should make a difference (one having vtec and the other not among other differences). So try swapping to the newer ecu (and run vtec to get the cams to run as they should), and yes the MAP sensor could have something to do with it especially if the hole is wide open on the throttle body and causing a leak; he'll need to get one anyways no matter what. But I don't think the MAP sensor alone would cause the motor to not even start, run right yes but not no starting. Other than that make sure your timing is set right. And personally I'd just use the other wiring harness if I were you, especially since you have it.

it was dpfi / d16 an we swap in a b16 an the trans did bolt up - so i need to put those 2 pins from the vtec in that wireharness ? or swap the whole harness an the ecu. cus my friend with a dif crx didnt change the ecu an his vtec works fine - an he did the same motor swap to same car with the same plugs....
an no spoon the motor was from a civic not a del sol - sorry i musta confused the shit out of all of u b4 because of the motor's i started talkin about but now i got the right motor names so .... hope this helps......
thanks for all your help hope to hear more

Yeah spoon he did have a cable tranny in his crx previously .... oh ok i gotcha now spoon ya i think your right - it was a d16 an now we have a sohc vtech 1.6 in it - - so yeah i put my finger over the hole when he tryed to start it so do you think i should just check the timing ?
thanks dude

maybe I am getting old and I just can't keep up with you young guys  - I need more punctuation and periods in my sentences so my brain can pause and comprehend before the next sentence begins :(
There is lots of info available for swapping a 5th gen (92-95) d16z6 (sohc vtec), into a 4th gen Civic/2nd gen CRX (88-91).

Here is some old but reliable data...have you done all this?
Make sure you read the correct section based on how the CRX started..I am guessing it is a DX if the old motor was DPFI.

There are also a few members here that have swapped in d16z6's into their 4G's, so maybe they'll chime in.

you need a map sensor to run. Hondas are speed density systems. they use map sensor input and engine rpm to determine fuel & ignition mapping.

Also check the basics, are all the connectors tight? Is the rotor turning? Is the distributer aligned correctly? While your at, how about the ignition timing? etc GL

yeah, i guess the basics check would be a good idea, but you're overlooking the real problem. Its like having a TV thats unplugged, and knowing its unplugged, but you wonder why it wont turn on! you check the power button, and the remote batteries, but the TV still wont turn on?? WHY??

get a map sensor.

are you from the states mate???? the B series DID come in the 5th gen civics just not in the states, and if the CRX had a D series and u jus put in a B series it would have needed new mounts, you shoulda got the loom for the new engine and chucked that in

Yeah I said that it didn't (meaning here in the states) because I saw his profile said he's in new jersey. I know that the b16a came stock in other places in the world jsut not here; I should have been more clear sorry bout that.
