is there anyone here that happens to know how a car's ECU is programmed. not like performance programming with a hypertech, but like what language is used? what kindof of data structures are implemented? i want to know why i have to buy a device that programs my computer, when i am perfectly capable of programming it myself...

I would ask the rice burners. Programming ECU's are a bigger thing with imports than domestic cars. Look on the net also. along time ao I found a place that provided software for programming the computer. Search for "desktop software ODB ODBII" or something of that nature

dont know really what language it's written in or anything. but i know the prom (programable read only memory)is programmed data tables. a program is written based on how the engine should opererate, then ecm takes incoming data and compares it to a table, then makes adjustments in pulse width, timing, etc. until the incoming data is closest to that table.

a programmer converts the information written to that prom into something you can read and adjust. check out thirdgen.org, i've seen a few tech questions on how to re-program and write scripts. i know third gens use OBDI, but OBDII is pretty much the same except the prom isn't removable.

indeed, i know that there is computer software on the market that can interface with the ECU and change values in the prom and such. i was wondering cause if i can write my own code to do that than i could save tons of money...

you can definatly write your own scripts, but learning how to do it will time some time. i'd like to learn how to do it too. i've read tons on how to un-loop, flash, write binary codes and script, but never had the time to sit down and try it.
