is the only way to re-adjust my speedometer (because of 3.73 gears) with a power programer?

im pretty sure that the power programmer does that. 94 and up the speedoes were comp controlled so if that doesnt do it, the dealership should be able to. but im 99.9% sure that the commercials for the programmer said theycan do it...

The other way would be the SLP speedometer calibrator. SLP no longer sells these, however they are sometimes on ebay.

Look in a Jegs magazine... They have a couple of speedo re-calibrators.

Here check this out....

140's a little steep for a speedo correction...

It's 349 for a hypertech programmer. So if all you wnated to do is do a gear change it's cheaper.

this is true, but i wonder if it would be cheaper to just let the dealership calibrate the speedo...

go here and get the 30 day free trail program...
http://www.tunercat.com/tnr_desc/do_tc.html
you need to get the file for you car, its like $20 bucks
http://www.tunercat.com/tnr_desc/do_tc.html
you will be allowed to go into you ecm and change the tire size, gear size, and any else you want...
you will also need the cable
http://www.akmcables.com/ic.htm
make sure you get the good cable because you do not want to fry the ecm, also as long as you have this cable you can scan your car for any codes you need to... so it pays for its self very quickly

The dealership will do nothing more than flash the stock programming in per your VIN number.

Anything other than the stock gearing and you are out of luck.

has anyone here purchased a power programer?... do you think it is worth the money? did you have any problems with it?

I bought one for my 96 SS mainly when I changed the gears.
I think they are worth the money. You can change gear ratios, change shift points (auto only), raise or lower you top speed limiter, change what temp your fans come on, change your rev limiter... But remember if you program your car with the programmer keep it and don't sell it. All your stock data from your computer is saved in the programmer along with your cars vin number. So if you go to sell your car or take it in for repairs return it to stock.

They are so simply to use even a monkey could use it.

96CamaroSS...it's $350 for the hypertech programmer which does all those things you listed in the above post? Interesting. What all do you need to have to use this? Do you need a laptop computer? or what?

You don't need anythign, just the programmer. Sucks for me how they only make one for v6';s for 00-02

before you go wasting your $350.00 bucks for that programmer you may want to look into this a little... you can do all the above and much more for less money, plus you can even check codes for problems...

If your vehicle is a manual, your speedometer will be off, and if your vehicle is out of warrenty, it really does not matter.

If your vehicle is an automatic, the transmission shifts the car from the readings of the MAF & Speedometer readings, this then would be a problem if the speedometer is not corrected.

are you saying the car will act all fucked up after I change the gears unless i re-program the speedometer right away?

what will happen and i speak from experience is that instead of going all the way to red line when u nail it in drive it will only go to like 5700 rpms then shift. I have the 3.73's and the programmer. Before i programmed the car its stoped redlining unless i manualy shifted. and the speedo was way off. I fixed that and now the car will redline again in drive. Plus i think the programmer is worth it i have it and i don't regret paying for it either. It is way easy to use. If u want a little more performance out of ur car then u can get the Diablo Sport Predetor programmer. It does all the same as the Hypertech plus it lets u mess with the timing and fuel curves and also scans ur car for codes when ur check engine light comes on. It cost $419.00

Geno I just did this last weekend on my 89. You have to switch the driven and drive gears that are in the transmission tail housing(for an automatic)

I had to buy mine from GM and they were kind of expensive but no big deal. Just make sure you do some searching and get the right gears to match the 3.73s.

I am taking it from your above answer that you have an A4 vehicle. As I mentioned above the PCM uses the data that the MAF and the Speedometer sensor send it. With a gear change to 3.73 (from 3.23) you are at least >500 RPM, your stock shift points are set to the gears that came from the factory, and the transmission will shift improperly.

"z-28 boy" has given you ONE example of what can happen, you will have to adjust both the MPH & RPM of the shift point. From his example he must of had 3.23's before the gear change.

If your vehicle has 2.73's, your problems will even be more compounded.

The example that is given with the 89 model vehicle will not apply to you, for you have an electronic sensor, not a gear to read the speedometer in your vehicle.

I guess I can not make it any clearer than that.

Hey 94CamaroZ28 if you ever watch trucks! or horsepower Tv on Spike, you see those power programmers.. Any computer mod they do... they use one of those... After they used one of those, they didn't even open up the hood, they put a 98 ls1 camaro on, got an extra 23 hp.. I say, go for it, i trust those fellas.

You can't go wrong with one of those, "do it right the first time", and save yourself alot of headaches.

Try to find someone that has already adjusted their shift points (both RPM & MPH), and find out how they did it, I had my vehicle professionally dyno tuned after a TC change, so the tuner addressed the shift point issues (along with alot of other problems I was having)

Good luck

ive got a 94, electronically shifted, guages electronically controlled. my speedo is off by about 5mph but it shifts fine. i dont understand why the car would shift according to the speedo and not even consider the tach. that just doesnt make sense...

Dober89

The transmission shifts according to engine rpm but you can have them fine tuned to accelerate better by holding gears longer and stuff like that.
