HI, I am new to this forum...i need some help. My 89 dodge colt I jut bought was sitting for a little while and now it starts but wont hold an idle....and it dies out. It is carberator type and i dont know much about them. could someone please help me out..if there is anyone out there who knows what performance carb will fit best please let me know...or just maybe give me a hand with the carb issue i have now. I can give it gas but as soon as i let off it just boggs out on me.... this car is a POS until i get this carb issue fixed or perhaps it is the timing i dont know...there has to be someone out there with some answers....thank you very much....

If the car has been sitting for a while it will probably straighten out if you can run it. Gasoline tends to create a varnish when it stands idle for a period of time. All of the jets, which are just real small holes, and check balls will get clogged by this reaction. A can of carb cleaner and fresh gas will be a great help even if you have to sit there and "feather" the gas pedal for a while you should see an improvement after a little bit of running. Unless the problem was there before it was left sitting. Try this first then let me know.

riverrat is right, carbs do gum up from stail gas it turns to a lacker and gums everything up try running some carb cleaner with a tank of gas if that doesnt fix it then, pull the carb and get a rebuild kit. THere only a few dollars and the fairly simple to do. GOOD LUCK
