It's pretty basic. Everyone runs the same roads (stages) and the fastest person at the end wins.
There is some stratagy involved like suspension setup and tire choice (which is critical ;)). Also on some rallys like Austrailla the drives don't want to be the first cars on the road so they have a nice rule now for those rallys that the winners of the last stages will get to pick their starting position.

Thanks for your reply!
How about scoring. I know there is seasons like any other sport. Is it like 1st place is 3 points, 2nd is 2 points, 3rd is 1 point and whoever has the most points at the end wins?
Also is one stage at a time or can there be many races going on at the same time on different stages? Is there an order they do the stages in? How many stages per season? just some things ive been wondering about .
thanks,

Scoring is like in Formula 1 -
1st -10pts
2nd - 6pts
3rd - 4pts
4th - 3pts
5th - 2pts
6th - 1pt
Same in the manufacturers' championship (although teams/cas that are not entered for every race of the season don't get manufacturers' points).
As for stages - well, there are 14 rounds (or 14 rallies in different countries) and these rounds take 3 days to complete and each day is split into several stages. For example, there were 14 stages in total in the rally of Sweden that just finished. It is usually 1 stage at a time, although the front runners will usually go over to the next stage before the previous is completely finished by those starting at the back.
Here is a nice link for you to guide you through this season http://www.wrc.com/en_GB/RallyGuide/EventCalendar/Calendar.htm?RallyName=2002_S
Enjoy

how many country's do they typically do?
Do you have AIM/ICQ? it would be easier to talk on there than on here. anyway thanks for the info,

No 14 seperate weekends of rally fun in different counties. Go to www.rally-live.com and check out the calander. This should give you a better idea. :)
