1988 1500 4x4 transfer case engaging problem

I have a 1988 GMC 1500 Sierra 4x4 that I can not get to engage. When I try to shift the transfer into anything other than 2x4 for some reason it blows the AC and Heater fuse. Any suggestions appreciated. None of the local dealerships have ever heard of this or can offer any suggestions. Thanks
