1996 Neon problems - need help

I have a 1996 neon that recently started stalling. Very first indication was car shuddering going 50mph, with tach pinging back and forth a 1000 rpm's quickly. The problem stopped, then in a few minutes, all the dash lights came one (like the car had stalled), then in a second, went back to normal. Got it home. A couple of days later, drove a few block down the road, then the car stalled. Tried to crank it, it cranked, but wouldn't start. Tried a couple of times, waited a few minutes, then tried again and it started. Once again drove a couple of blocks then it died again. Any ideas???
