Help throttle cable burned up

Hi all, Need help on my plain jane 85 fiero. Does anybody know what would cause my throttle cable to burn up? Yep it burned up and fried. I dont think it was touching the manifold. Before this the engine has not been running very good. Lost cold start idle and when its warm its boggy. (need help on that too) It has all new plugs, wires, coil, yada, yada, yada. all new or fairley new tune up parts. A friend mentioned a tps sensor and maybe a temp sensor could be causing the car not to run well. It bogs down when you give it the gas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I recently had the same problem on my 85, that is, the bogging down thing. When I'd hit the gas it'd bog down for a sec then rev up. I tracked the problem down to a badly adjusted tps, it was setting code 22 as well. Backprobe the middle terminal on the tps with a multimeter: at closed throttle it shouldn't be below 425mV and at WOT it shouldn't be over 5V, go from closed throttle to wide open throttle in a smooth sweep, there should be a steady increase - not all jumping around. Also you should check if there's a good 5v coming in on one of the other terminals and a good ground at the other. As far as the burned up throttle cable, I don't think the intake would get hot enough to even melt it, maybe if it's touching the exhaust. There could be a cable across it that's shorting to ground somehow, I'm just guessing on that though. Good luck!

Peace,

Thanks for the advice when I get my throttle cable fixed I will work on the tps. Hope that is all that is wrong with it.

Coolant temp sensor would do that too. Check the ECM codes if any and use those as a guide. If you have a 4cyl, the TPS shouldn't be adjustable, so if you get codes on it it's either wiring or must be outright replaced.

Dunno what made the throttle cable melt like that but when you replace it strap it in place with zip ties. I nuked a brand new battery cable on the manifold because it was flopping around.
