Here's my enrty for the Diecast Contest. A Welly 1951 Ford F-1
I'll name it "AREA 51"
I don't have any out of the box pics, I had it less than 10 mins when it was attact by the phillips :evillol:

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51firstshot-01.jpg
Chassy removed, sitting on dubs style wheels, wheels spinning in the brain, Ideas flying around.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51cabcut-01.jpg
Cuts made to lower the cab in relation to the fenders and bed You can see how much was removed by the hood sitting there.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51cab2bedcut-01.jpg
Cuts to the back of the cab to line up the bed, worked out perfect to line up with the body line on the cab.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51cutsside-01.jpg
Ready to epoxy the cab back to the front fenders and the the back of the cab. Next is to cut the hood and
chop the top.

I'll post more pics as I progress.

Looking forward to spending some time here and allways watching for the new mods.

How come you havent stripped the paint yet? or even roughed it up?

I was trying to post my original, then this update last night, but the forum kept going down. Didn't even know the first part got posted.

Well here's the update.

This diecast is some tough stuff to cut. I have a dremell with cutting wheels, a hand hack saw, hobby saw... used them all cutting this thing up.
http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51strip-01.jpg

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51strip-02.jpg
Decided to strip it down to the metal before epoxying it back together. This stuff works great! In a lil under an hour, the paint just fell off. Put a quick light primer coat on after I got it washed down.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51frntangle-01.jpg
Still allot of work to go, most of the heavy metal cutting is done. and metal parts epoxied in place. Bet my truck can out-stare your truck :) Damn that grill is fugly.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51backangle-01.jpg
Going to eliminate all that tailgate hanging garbage. Make a nice smooth, fixed tailgate and a rollpan.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51topchop-01.jpg
Chopped the top, still allot of clean up and filling to do.

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/51cowl-01.jpg
This is all firmly epoxied in place. Got the hood cut down. All this fits really well, still needs filler and fine detailing. I'll be cutting the door window frames to fit next and start filling all the door handle, mirror, emblem holes etc. Still need to build the door hinges for the suicide doors.
Next update the body will be completely filled, primed and ready for final sanding and paint. I'll work on the chassy, engine and interior mods before final painting.

all u do is put epoxy putty on there and it holds it ?

It's a 2 part epoxy...

http://www.cwmax.com/dimages/epoxy-01.jpg

I didn't know what to use to stick the peices together. I had used this stuff 1 1/2 years ago to keep a sloppy fitting bushing in place in the upper control arm on my 93 Jeep. It's still there so I figured it would hold the diecast together. You can grind and sand it, softer than the metal, harder than body filler. Fully cures in about 12-16 hours.

May or may not be the right thing to use. Works so far.

ok thanx , i might get into diecast modelin in the future after i finish my 10 amt plastic models lol, um another question did u have to split the roof to make it fit after u chopped it , how did u chop it?

cwmax
08-21-2004, 10:20 PM
I didn't split the roof on this one. There was only .02 diff in the the width at the back and .01 at the front after the cuts. There's enough metal to grind away and fill. Front to back I made a cut on the inside at the windsheild line, leaving a little metal, and bent the post to line up with the cowl. (see last pic in second set of pics). I lined up the door line on the front, wish I had done the same on the rear instead of lining up the back of the cab. Would have saved alot of reshaping at the rear door line.

I learned

Yup... the whole feel of the truck is kinda primer or RatRod flat black, jump in to make that beer run or saturday night cruise, and look cool in either case :smokin:

But after all this fill'n, file'n, sand'n, fill'n, file'n, sand'n, fill'n, file'n, sand'n,..... did I mention the Squadron green dust snort'n.... :evillol: I almost feel obligated to make it shiny. We'll see.

I like the early wheels, big white walls, But.... I have other ideas. Have to see how good I can put the idea from brain to reality.

Nice Progress!!!!! here you are well into your customization, im sitting here deciding on what rims i want to use, i need to get crackin

Still a ways to go. I'll get all the heavy work done, make sure the big parts fit. Then take it appart and work on the details. Wheels??? Too many choices, I still don't know what will end up on here in the end.

Omg Wow :eek2: that this is amazing keep us posted..

The grill is here to stay, too ugly not to use it :iceslolan.

Thanks for the comments all..... more to come...

Had a lil time this week to get a few things done.

The chassis need some cleaning up. After removing the running boards and all the shipping lugs and junk, what was left was a some ugly plastic with a bunch of holes in it. Filling it with filler was just not going to work so I fab'd up the new pieces out of styrene sheet. They fill the area between the frame rails and the body. I'll paint these to match and install them after the chassis is mounted to the body, there are two screws under there that attatch the chassis to the body.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/19897251exhst-01-med.jpg

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/19897251exhst-03-med.jpg

I also fab'd up the new dual exhaust, using styrene rod and tube. Drilled the holes in the trans crossmember for the pipes to pass, then over the rear axle and out the back. The tips I made I may change to aluminum if I can find the right diameter, maybe paint these. Need to make one more bracket to hold the tips in place.

http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/500/19897251exhst-02-med.jpg

New front crossmember had to be made. I swiped the motor out of my YM 48, it has allot better detail. It didn't fit right in, so the new crossmember was made from styrene and the original crossmember.

That's it for now. All these pieces still need a going over to clean up the rough edges.

I'll jump on the engine next, till then....

What's the diameter of the Styrene rod and tube?

The rod is 1/8 OD Plastruct #MR-125
The tube is 3/16 OD .133 ID Plastruct #TBFS-6

There are other tubes with 1/8 ID but it's thicker walled.

This tube fits just a lil loose on the rod, but the wall is thin and looks about right.

Hey man great progress so far i liek the fat whites it give the truck class, i have a custom idea for you maybe u'd wanna put it to thougth ,im not sayin u have to do it this is just my tatse,, how bout u take the exhaust and have it come out through the rear roll pan, u know cut out two holes the diameter of the tail tips andhave it stick out a lil bit ya know , catch what i mean and make aluminum exhaust tips and do it that way , just a thought, keep up the awesome work !!!!!

cwmax
09-04-2004, 12:14 AM
I had that in mind as well as putting the tail lights in it, but ..... the roll pan I made is thin styrene, the rest of it is part of the bed (metal) no way to drill it now :-(

A lil progress over the weekend.

This is the engine out of the YM 48 pickup. The air cleaner is off a 53 pickup. Plug wires on, fuel line. I KNOW!! ... the wires are big, I used what I had on hand, I'll make a trip to the electronics store before my next and get the right sizes. cut the original molded in dist and made one.

Painted everything, trans, intake, belts, carb, block etc. I had to brush the block using Tamiya red. I wanted to spray it, but could only find Bright Red in spray, it looked too orange to me.

First time using the Tamiya acrylics.... seem to dry too fast to me, brush stroke hell. I guess I need to learn how to use'm

Got the chassis painted gloss black, need to wait a lil to dry before I mask and paint the inner panels semi gloss black, I'll post some pics later.

Comments .......

Till next .....

I personally would love it in a primer, any color primer, flat blue, flat purple, any color that is flat cw will look hot , and put them fat white wall tires on there and this thing will be stylin baby lol ima greaser so i love flat paint and primered cars. Hot rods or as u all know them as rat rods forever . o yea satan paints look hiot too, not shiny but not flat they are perfect lol keep up the fantastic work man i love it!!

Tim, just drop it. Its really getting old now. You and I have different opinions on whats cool. I like street rods, you like rat rods.

I like smooth, streak, moving lines. You like lines from other cars put together to make a rust bucket painted in primer.
