lost locking lug nut key

i bought a car and the owner does not have the locking lug nut key. What can I do?

i dont think vice grips would put enough of a hold on something that tight, worth a try. Other than that cut a slot down one sid of it, not deep enough to cut the threads of course, and use a cold chisle to spread the nut apart so you can get it off. Also, whats the manf.? cant you jsut go get another one at the dealer or something?

Often factory locking nuts use just one of a few key patterns. The dealer could identify the pattern and sell you a key or just remove then for you.
If its aftermarket, it may be a lot of trouble.

As for removal, a hammer and chisel might work, but instead of splitting the nut, try first to hit the chisel so it bits into the nut at an angle, so you might be able to knock it loose.

Another trick is to try some metric or standard 12 point sockets. Locate the one that is closest to fitting over the nut but not quite. Then use a big hammer to drive the socket over the nut. Often the socket can bite into the sides of the nut just enough to get a grip, then twist the socket off.
Use a good quality socket and eye protection.

As a last resort, a regular nut can be welded to the lug nut so a wrench can be used.
