I just bought a 87 fiero GT, and when it sits over night and I start it up, it smokes alittle. It runs pretty good, but has 121,000 miles on it. What could that be?

I want to do an engine swap, but I don't have alot of money. I want more power, and something reliable. What engines are good, how much are they, where do you find them, and where do you get them put in?

I would like to have about 200hp or more is that possible for a decent price?

Good and cheap don't go together, just like fast and cheap or 200 HP and cheap.

The start up smoking is more than likely to be the valve guides being dried out and or worn out.

If you find a cheap 3.4L Camaro (1990's) engine, it will fit the 2.8 as a replacement that has ~170 HP and needs some minor starter position fabrication. The Fiero intake system is a direct fit. But an engine from a wrecked car will probably have also 120,000 miles on it. A new 3.4L engine will be about $2k, then you'll need thottlebody, injectors (either rebuilt, cleaned or replaced) etc to get that all up and running. If you have it done by an experienced mechanic expect the job to cost ~$4K or more.

Heck, as long as you don't have to do E-checks, and you are wanting an engine swap anyway, and it doesn't smoke after the first couple seconds of starting it up......See how far it will go before it dies! You might be surprised....i've put about 50k miles on mine with it doing the same thing and it still runs strong!
