Lifter Cladder

I took my baby to the delership today to get some advise about some ticking noise coming from the upper front side of my engine. The greasemonky said my lifters are making a lot of cladder and that they could replace them for 1500.00 for the lifters and another 700.00 labor. He also said it would be a good idea for me to get a new water pump for about another 200.00 or so. Does this sound round or should I get some 2nd opinions from some more shops. See my car doesn't tick all the time only after it warms up or when my oil is getting low. Is there anything that I can do to help make what I have last as long as possable? I dont have that kind of money to dump into this car as much as I love it I only paid 4000g's for it. Thicker oil maybe, the car has 134,000 and still runs like a striped ass ape! Should I just keep driving it or am I doing more damage to it as time goes on I am at a loss any help would be greatly aprechated

The lifters on my 3.1L Malibu did the same thing. Now, I know that the 3.1 in the Malibus aren't the same as the V6's or V8's in the Aurora's, but I never had any trouble with them, except the noise. In any vehicle repair, unless it's under warranty, I would get a second opinion, especially something that would be a big job. Have you tried running something like Valvoline High Mileage or Castrol High Mileage? Just a thought...
As for the water pump, is that parts an labor or just parts? If it's both, I would go ahead and do that.

I would simply put in the Castrol High Mileage Oil or at the very least use 10w40 motor oil. This should help quiet the noise. My rule of thumb is to always get a second opinion before spending more than $500.00. Just my 0.02 cents.

When I said Water Pump I ment to say oil sorry for the confusion. I just got back from a camping/canew? trip to Lesterville MO From Auburn IL 700miles round trip with my fingers crossed. As for oil I am curintly using Val High Millage 10w-30. whitch is better Castrol or Val or should I try a synthetc oil

If you're getting good oil pressure (which can be as low as 5 psi hot at idle), forget about spending all that $ on fixes.
I've got over 186,000 miles on my 95 now. It really pisses me off how I do all kinds of regular maintenance on my car myself, yet both times I've had it in to the dealership for a tricky diagnosis (which they still f'ed up... grrr...) they give me a list of things I need done based solely on mileage. It seems to come out to over $2000. They always include things like shocks, rotors & pads, ect. Did you even LOOK at my car numbnuts? How obvious can 2 week old bright friggin white Monroe air shocks on the back be?
If nothing else your car should tell you if you have low oil pressure. I don't know what to tell you about the noises since I don't really have much in the way of that even now.
Oh, and about the oil. I saw a link on here to some website like bobistheoilguy.com or something like that. There are some really nutty folks over there that get waaaay too much into their oil. There is a bit of useful info though. One of the things that I gleaned is that syntetic oil can act about like an enema on an older (dirty) engine. It will just clean all sorts of garbage out and plug up your oil filter the first time you use it. They recommended changing your oil after about 1000 miles the first time just to be safe. Aside from the cleaning effect, there didn't seem to be much advantage to using sythetic oil if you change your oil much before 5000 miles according to them either. It's only the longer change intervals that let the dino oil break down.

Does this problem happen all the time or just sometimes? My 95 has what sounds like lifters. I had a couple local mechanics look at it and said its not lifters its one of the front timing tensioners. Our cars have three timing chains.
I am not sure if this is accurate or not. Once every 6 days it will cladder loudly and it may stay for 3 days and it may stay for 10 minutes. It happens when its cold or hot. It does not get better or worse. Its either on or off. Anyone else had similar experiences? Bottom line its internal engine and probably involves dropping it to fix it. For now I will try to keep my car under 2500rpm in order to not worsen the problem.

Did'nt know overhead cam engines had lifters. Are you sure?
