I just bought a 1993 gxe with 75k miles for 1750, the paint is pealing and fading + little rust, and the interior has some sigar burns but other than that it was a great deal, or so I thought.
here is the problem:
When i put the car in D it won't move, as if it where in neutral, I've heard of people with this same problem but it was online and i coudn't get any help because they posted years ago. If I go down to second and then just right up to Drive, it would work; but if i come from the top and just stop in the D it'll be like in neutral.:screwy:
I've heard this is because of a switch in the transmission that needs to be replaced but i just bought this car and I don't want to get a bad deal so I'll like to know if anyone know prices to fix this so i do't get rip off. Also I'll like to know if i can drive it like that ultill i can save more money since i'm broke; i don't even have my license yet and my car is broken:mad:, i have to buy insurance, register the car, i have no money to fix the it. I've driven the car like 4 miles and that's it. Help please;
Anyone with this problem? HELP:disappoin

My 93 with 175k miles sometimes doesnt go into gear this way. I too pull back without pressing the trigger and it will work smoothly.

You need a new shift cable.
can you especify on this please:confused:? i mean did you fix your car? or do know some one who had this problem?
How mucho was it with labor?
Is that a light problem, or something that is left like that might break somthing more expensive?
Thanks for all the help:).

I'm an Infiniti/Nissan technician.Have repaired this problem many times.There is a pivot at the transmission end of the cable that seizes causing incorrect gear selection.You could try to lubricate this pivot with penetrating fluid.If not ,change the cable.
Good luck

I'm in Canada.Have your mechanic {or yourself} follow the shift cable to where it meets the transmission.{Left side of transmission{front of car}.Remove the nut holding the cable to the trans. shift lever.{12mm wrench}. At the cable end you will see an oval shaped bushing in the centre.This bushing must rotate freely inside the "eye" of the cable end.If not lubricate with penetrating fluid till it rotates freely.If not cable must be replaced.Put shifter in park,At transmission end move selector lever to park ,pull down on cable while installing onto selector lever,install nut and tighten.Reassemble everything removed and recheck operation.I don't know how to send an attachment in this forum.
Good luck.
Good luck.

hi the most likely problem you are having is this.....there is a small bushing under the shifter that goes bad,,,,,,to get to it you have to jack the car up,slide under it and you will see a shield covering the shifter with couple of 10mm bolts, remove it and you will see the underside of the shifter where the bushing is,,,,remove the clip and washer and linkage,,,you will see the bushing stuck is the shifter, remove it and replace it,,,,,reassembly in the reverse,,,,and this should fix your problem.
