94 4x4 needs new engine

I recently purchased a 94 pick-up (22RE) engine that started making pronounced banging. Possible problems: spun bearing, rod problem. Sounds like piston is hitting top of cylinder in higher RPM. Mechanic friend says I need to consider new rebuilt engine, because of possible damage to the current one. If I go this route, who makes a decent rebuilt engine? I'm a novice mechanic at best... how hard is an engine swap to pull off and what kind of time commitment am I looking at? Any advice appreciated.

I have had good luck with Jasper engines, tho' they are a little expensive. If you can find a good deal on one in a bone yard that may be a good option too. If you can live without the truck for a while, pull the motor and see what is going on and find out what a machine shop will charge for the repair. How many miles by the way? Can you isolate the noise? These motors are well known for a timing chain guide failure that makes a noise on the top of motor. Pull the valve cover off and check chain guides. You can also try using a mechanics stethiscope to help localize the noise (use a scerwdriver held to your ear if you dont have a steth.)

Thanks for your advice natenelsen. The mileage is right at 122,000. I'm making arrangements with a friend who has the equipment to pull the motor. I will definitely check the timing chain guide as you suggest. Again, thanks. Mark
