overheating probs plz help asap

hey guys, earlier today i had problems with my temp gauge rising to the point where the check gauges light comes on and my car overheats, i stopped at my friends house lifted the hood and some smoke was coming out, i recently filled up my coolant because it was low and it also stalls when it idles at a light or when you come to a complete stop, and when it stalls it doesnt start back up right away, till you give it a few tries, i recently just put in a new headgasket maybe a month ago or so, also after about 10 min of driving with the car stalling and overheating i turned it off and you can hear bubbling underneth the hood, and it was loud, obviously its from the liquids being boiled in there, can anyone help me?

Maybe a thermostat?

Like jayson716 said-check thermostat. Also check to see if it's installed the right way around.

Stuck/reversed thermostat
Failed head gasket (yes, they can fail right fter you put them in-especially if the head wasn't torqued down correctly.). I knew a guy who replaced his own head gasket and in his haste to finish the job, neglected to notice that some of the water passage knockouts had not been knocked out of the gasket and were left behind-clogging those passages and stopping coolant flow thru thaose passages.

Collapsed radiator hose on the bottom (suction side of the pump)

Cooling fan malfunction preventing it from coming on when it's supposed to.
Lime and scale deposits clogging the water jackets from use of tapwater in cooling system.
Clogged radiator cores.
Ignition timing incorrect/mixtures too lean (sensor(s) malfunctioning).

I had the same overheating problem on my 98 Z-24. Let the car run in idle with the hood up. Watch the temp gage & look for the fan to kick on. If it doesn't it's the relay or the fan motor. There are two of the same relays in my bank so I swapped them. It still didn't come on so I replaced the fan motor. Problem was solved for $25.

sums it to a T. also if you did a head gasket did you get the surfaces checked for warping from the privious head gasket failure? if not that could be a potential and expensive problem.

I didn't have to replace the head gasket. Lucky for me, or the thermostat. The thermostats a bitch to replace on my '98. I initially replaced one of the two temp sensors, but it didn't fix the problem. My daughters '98 Sunbird had the same overheating problem as well. It also was the fan motor. Go figure!
