Hi everybody, this is what I'm currently working on. It's a '69 Plymouth Roadrunner.
So far I've done the outline. This is going to be a color drawing, so the front wheel hasn't been rendered yet. C&C are welcome.

Nice, now try doing that same car in a freehand sketch, now that you have done it. Im not that convinced by your sketches and then your fully detailed renderings :screwy: They are just wayy too different apart from each other. :screwy: :screwy: :screwy:

Looking great! Just wondering if you will be laying color over the existing drawing? I see you have a lot of detail in the front rim and looks like you are rendering this w/ graphite (final) not color.
Will this be color pencil?
Thx Alex

Hi everybody and thanks.
Joeham: yeah, a big difference in time makes a big difference in quality. There's a big difference between using a grid and drawing freehand too.
Al: The front rim hasn't been rendered yet. It does look a little bit like it because I had to outline it with a HB mechanical lead so I could see all the detail. A 2h pencil(used for the rest of the outline, except front logo and grill) doesn't show up very dark on the type of paper I'm using. I'll be using prismacolors for this one.

Nice choice.
Be as careful on the rubber as you are in the grill and this one could be my fave.

Alex, that is right. I keep forgetting that a digital image of a graphite drawing comes out darker many of the times esp. if you use a camera and/or PS. Mine come out darker too.

Hi again, here's another update. I've started the rendering. The interior isn't finished yet, and I think the grill still needs a little more burnishing.

wow! How long did it take for you to colour up to now... and the highlights: do you 'not colour' that part or do you use an eraser?
Really impressive..

thanks gamsaleh. took about 3-4 hrs for the outline, and about another 4 for the rendering so far. As for highlights, Prismacolors are pretty much impossible to erase. the only way to really erase is to take a kneaded eraser, press it really hard against the paper and lift off the color. for highlights, i don't color the area, or sometimes you can take a sharp white prisma pencil which will lighten an area.
I'm posting the ref pic for you guys to look at. Since I'm not drawing trees in the background, I wanted to leave out most of the tree reflections on the hood.

Looking good so far! I like the way you've dulled down the colours. The only thing is the left headlights which aren't as square as in the ref pic.

Al: Rising stonehenge, 9x12"
Ross: thanks, I'll try to fix them.
Zwofurti: please explain. Grainy/too blended? Too flat/rounded? etc.
I should post another update tomorrow. BTW, were the forums down last night and this morning, or does my computer just suck?

No, something wrong with the server probably. It happened to everyone. I think that Zwofurti meant that the roof line isn't quite smooth compared to the ref pic, but thats easy to fix.

You're right Ross, the roof won't be too much of a problem.
QM: hey, you're back! Where'd yo go? Thanks for the comment by the way.
Here is an update that I scanned while the AF server was down. I should be done by the end of today.

Ross: I'm not sure why the license plate says that, and I'll draw one of the characters(coyote), but I have no idea what the one behind it is.
GvEman: sure, man... I could teach you some stuff.
Another update here. It's almost finished.

The one in front is the Roadrunner!! There from the cartoon, the name of the car gives it away really :). Brilliant render of the car reflection on the side btw.

My god that looks incredibly awesome! I sure do see the reflection of the car next to it. Looks magnificent. Only thing that i would work on would be the windshield but im sure you have that covered and under control!

 Like I said...good. Now I need to be able "color" like that.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments. Thanks Ross, now I see the Roadrunner... but unfortunately, I filled in the dark areas in the interior, so it's too late to add him. I did do the Wile E. Coyote though.
This is the finished product.

Thanks Zwofurti.
getting colored pencils smooth is just a matter of repeatedly layering and burnishing. Use a rougher paper that can take lots of cp layers.
If you're mixing 2 colors, apply the base color lightly, then the other color. Then burnish. Then add some more of the 2 colors... then burnish again. Keep this up until the color is solid and vibrant. If you look at the rear of this Roadrunner, I mixed a bit of yellow into the red.
Hope this helps.
Btw, have you ever tried using colored pencil?
Alex

Hi Alex,
Awesome job, man.
There is something that bothers me. The front windshield and interior viewed through it, seems rushed. Not sure what it is. The rest of the ride looks so real but the areas mentioned above don't. That is just me, can't please everyone right. :)
You may have had better results using another ref. pict. for the interior/wind shield.
But hey you know you are one of the best artists here. :grinyes:

I think you have to follow this up with a Super Bird.
I'm not sure but I think It's an unwritten Muscle Car rule.
A super bird and this would make a great pair to sell. I prefer the lime green. I expect it by tomorrow so don't waste time responding....DRAW!!!
-Lemorris
p.s. Great burnishing. Red is a tough color to tackle with prismas the oxidation tends to rear it's ugly head almost right away. Do you fix?
Have you ever tried fixing with Krystal Clear when you're all done?
Once the krystal clear drys it makes your prima look like a solid decal floating above the surface...wicked.
Great job.

al: thanks, but i agree with the windshield. The ref pic gave it a foggy, blurred effect.
Zwofurti: sounds good. are you going to post it soon?
Lemorris: Thanks, which year for the super bird? Maybe once i finish it, I could get your help to include the two cars witha background, create a scene and sell prints of it. and yeah i do use Krylon workable fixative to spray my drawings. Where can i buy krystal clear? it sounds cool.
