i have a 2000 grand prix gtp and i would like to know if the stock transmission can handle torque and hp upgrades (ie:smaller pulley, exhausy, CAI, etc.). Basically, what's the overall durability of the transmission and how much more increase in power can it withstand? if it can't handle it (or just to be safe) what mods can i make on my transmission to ensure that i don't destroy it, hopefully without speding all of my money.

Every car can be different. Im on my 4th trans.
Worse thing to do is burnouts. Even more worse would be turning the wheels left or right while burning out. Like pealing out going around a corner. Doing this will be very bad for the differential You could snap the pinion shaft/ snap the roll pin / crack the sypder gears.
If you do any of those and the case doesnt break then it is very easy to drive around w/ a busted differential that will send metal shavings into the trans.
Thats what happened to 2 of my transmissions.
Other thing that has gone bad was the input shaft. A combo of solid motor mounts, raised trans line pressure and too much torque snapped my input shaft at the o-ring groove. During the rebuild they discovered that the differentail was busted also, the pump shaft was scored and the chain was stretched.
check out the following companies for trans upgrade parts.

so what would you say are the chances of my transmission breaking if i added a wizaired cai, gtx ram air hood, slp catback exhaust, and dhp pcm with adjustable timing? also, i was wondering how much the sway bars improved your handling?
(by way, the nice car)

My car whines in first and second but doesn't whine at all in drive. The whine is pretty loud and increases with the rpm's. What is it? Also, my link http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.asp?m=1620131&p=2&tmode=1&smode=1
Another with similar problem just like mine: http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.asp?m=1575039&p=2&tmode=1&smode=1

I wouldnt worry bout the trans w/ those mods. Just lay off those one wheel burnouts.
A Limited Slip Differential is always a good upgrade. INTENSE would be the way to go. Ive destroyed 2 CYA RAcing LSD's so I cant recommend them at all.
Adjustable timing is more for if you have an intercooler. I really wouldnt want to mess w/ timing unless the car was intercooled
(thanks)

I ran w/ no trans cooler when I lived in IL. Didnt install one until I moved to TX. It gets a lot hotter sitting in traffic in TX then IL.
I'd check out ZZP's site. They have some good mod advice

From all theinfo I gather these transmission really don't need a cooler unless your towing. Heat failure is far from the killer of these trannies.
