My 88 Blazer Is Burning Oil

I have an 88 blazer with a 350. We took the head off and replaced the head gasket and once we got the engine back up to running it started smoking. It doesnt smoke that bad only a little bit when I start it up, sometimes blue smoke and sometimes black smoke. So if anybody has any ideas what I could do let me know. But im probally just going to end up doing a motor swap, just because it would probally be the best thing for the truck.

Is the engine otherwise sound? Those older 350's were notorious for bad seals around the valve stems. Residual oil slowly trickeles down the intake valve stem when parked and settles aroud the intake port, causing a puff of blue upon start up. New seals usually clears this up.
However, if this is something new, likely your intake manifold gasket is leaking, allowing just a bit of oily vapour to be sucked in from the lifter valley.

Yea other then that the motor is working fine, but also like a oily water comes out of the exhaust sometimes when I start it up.But it is probally the first thing you said because we replaced the intake gasket when we replaced the head gasket. Also if anyone knows a good site to buy gm engines from please let me know, Thanks

Oily water coming out of your exhaust is perfectly fine. I thought it was strange at first but my neighbours van is like a water hose that spurts out water 1 meter from the muffler on startup :S. There's nothing wrong with that because it's a 2003 (practically new at the time). It's just condensation but you obviously knew that. The oily part is most likely due to the residue found in the piping.

I heard someone say that a new headgasket takes time to settle in an engine because oil residue fills in the spots and acts as a complete seal. Try runing it a few times and see what happens.

is it actually using oil between oil changes or just puffing smoke? Could just be your cats, mine did that even when i put in my new 350

My dad said that it was but I really dont think it is. .It doesnt blow the puff out every time only after its been sitting, so maybe it is just the cats. But how come sometimes its blue sometimes it black?

Well there could still be some oil deposits in the old cats that havent burned off yet. Also how old are the cats? I would say before you do an engine swap, unless you really want to anyways, that you should replace the cats first and see if that does the trick? If it doesnt use any oil durning oil changes, then you probably arent burning oil.

.Well once i get caught up with everything im going to put a new exhaust on it but im doing away with the cats. .When we got the rear done we had a new exhaust on it but im not sure if he got a new cat on it or not. .The engine swap isnt coming anytime soon and i moght just sell it not sure yet
