I've got a 1985 535i with some old crappy rusty exhaust with a broken cat and 2 mufflers... im getting this taken off very soon. I'm looking into some Magnaflow systems, but don't know if thats even a good idea. Has anyone tried putting high flow exhaust on one of these cars? does it sound good or like cheap coffee can exhaust? or can anyone recommend another brand? im looking for a nice sound.

thanks

BMW's stock exhausts are pretty good. Don't know how much extra power you'll be able to squeeze out of the car with a performance exhaust but I'm beting it won't be much. On the E34's you can pull about 2-3 more horse out of the exhaust system. If you get a name brand exhaust you'll probably be paying just for the name and the "sound". Since it seems like you need a new exhaust anyway think about a low cost option (like stock) and sink your money into something that will give you more bang for your buck. (There's a ton of BMW tuners out there like dinan, and turner motorsport for engine and suspension stuff)

The problem is that on the 85 535i, the header and the catalytic converter are one piece.
I've seen stock replacements selling for $700 to $1200.
Another problem is that some people consider the headers to be the two three-inch adapters that go from the head to the rest of the exhaust, rather than the tuned, 6-pipe bundle-o-snakes that I want...
I had a guy weld a plug where mine got a hole in it for $20. I'm going to drive it until the whole thing rusts out, then go turbo.

PS-I'd rather spend $1200 on a turbo than on a stock integral cat/header.

I just put a cat-back magnaflow system on my 535i last week. It sounds GREAT (if anyone has ever heard a WRX with high flow cat-back, thats what it sounds like almost exactly). Btw the exhaust I had on before wasn't stock, the stock one got screwed up like 10 years ago and it had some really crappy 1.75" Ford exhaust system thrown on. If anyone else is considering this for their 535i, I would definately recommend it.

My dad has an 1988 M5 with the B & M cat-back, i have never heard a nicer sound, very pricy but well worth it, it is supplied through bavarian autosport
