TPS adjustment

Hi,

I have an 87 celica st with and idle problem. The idle is perfect unless the accelerator is let off slowly; then it will jump to 1500-2000 rpm. Tap the accelerator and the idle drops to a steady 650rpm. Im guessing its the tps.

What is the voltage output produced by the tps when adjusted correctly and what terminals should i connect to get get this reading? The chilton manual completly skips this info and nobody seems to give me an exact answer. Thanks.

This may be tough to find. Stop by a dealer's service department in person (when they aren't too busy) and ask a service advisor or mechanic for this information. Alot of times they will help you with this.

Assuming that you have the 3SFE engine in your vehicle, the TPS can be checked only for continuity across the IDL-E1, PSW-E1 and IDL-PSW.If you unplug the sensor, you will notice three distinct poles- the top one is the PSW,the center is E1 and the bottom is IDL.
You need an Ohmmeter, a 50mm and 90mm feeler gauge.Place the feeler gauge on the stop screw of the throttle body. (use both sizes to get better results). With the 50mm:
Between IDL-E1-continuity
Between PSW-E1- no continuity
Between IDL-PSW- no continuity
With the 90mm:
Between IDL-E1- no continuity
Between PSW-E1- continuity
Between IDL-PSW- no continuity
If the resistance is not within specs. loosen the two screws at the rear of the TPS and move the body counterclockwise until the needle on the ohmmeter deflects. Set at this point. RECHECK and leave alone.
This is all of the testing of which I am aware- hope it helps. Naraine
