I am having trouble with my 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix with 3.1L V6. It occasionally dies at idle, and almost always coughs when under heavy, quick acceleration, half the time it dies when this happens. It also has trouble starting each time, and if I dont let off the ignition right as it begins to take over for itself, then it wont start for me. I had the ICM replaced a year and a half ago (when it died on me on christmas day) and I ran a test in my book that is pointing to either a bad ECM or an intermittent problem. Fortunately, I work at Autozone, so I can go get an ECM and see if that works for me, any suggestions??
Thanks a ton!!!!

Its not the ECM. I bought one and replaced mine with it and it did not help. Its either the PROM, ICM, or wiring between the ICM and ECM.

try the crank sensor, it may have an intermittent short in the windings, its a simple swap and not to expensive. If that doesn't work, you need an ignition module. Both of these can cause a code 42, due to no spark signal reaching the ecm

ok sorry for my brother not replying to this post when we finally fixed his car BUT we replaced the ICM and it fixed the problem. Aparently the body shop that he had his car in a couple years ago replaced it with a bad one. So I apologize to the people that had the same problem and didnt know what resolved it
