1995 Jeep Cherokee Cuts off w/o warning.

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L. While driving, the vehicle will just cut out. No sputtering, no hesitation...just turn off. It would take a couple of tries to get the vehicle to start again but, would run fine after it was started. My first assumption is that it was an electrical problem but, then i noticed a rattle in the catalytic converter. However, i asked someone to take a look at it and they said they had reset one of the relays. Now, it's been running fine (with lots of use) for the past month or so but, the other morning it started no problem...but, within five mins of idling it cut out, only to not start again until later that afternoon. So, I removed the catalytic converter(which desperately needed it). It starts fine...and runs fine(have a new cat. on order). Yet, the vehicle still keeps cutting out without warning. I checked the grounds...everything looks good. The fuel pump seems to be coming on with the key. Anyone have any suggestions???? Could it be something silly like the map sensor or the relays? It's totally sporatic...but, it's become more often since the other day. any help will be much appreciated.

It's your crankshaft position sensor. It's located on your crankshaft
housing. It's an awful pain in the ass to get to, but I changed mine
in about 20 minutes. If you look up a CPS for your make you'll
get a detailed description of how to find it and change it. This
drove me nuts for about a month, and damn near killed me once.
It's an awful little device tha has about a 60,000 mi. lifespan.
Auto Zone had one for 40 bucks, O'Reilly had the same EXACT
part for 79 bucks so watch what you pay. Good luck Ed.

Yup good advice. On my 1990 changing the CS position sensor isn't a bad job, I'm not sure on later models.
Changing it every 60 or 70k is good advice versus getting your jeep towed when it cuts out on the highway :)
