My husband and I purchased an 01 Chevy Suburban LT a couple of weeks ago, we have put approx 500 miles on it and today the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came on!! What should we do?? Is this something we can fix on our own? Any help would be GREAT!!!

Does your sub also have a check engine light? If so, the light you are seeing is just a reminder to have routine maintenance done. If not, autozone or some of the other major parts stores can read and interpret the codes for you.

The SES light indicates that the PCM (computer) has seen a problem with a system it controls or monitors and has set a code.
you will have to get the code pulled to determine what componant or system the fault is on.
Some of your chain autoparts stores (autozone) have scanners and can pull the code for you.
Post the code number and we can help you.

Thanks!! I'll swing by my local Autozone over lunch. Stay tuned! (It has approx 87,700 miles on it so I'm hoping for a routine service code)

Ok, they didn't give me a code but they said it was an emission control valve. And this means what? Thanks for all your help.

Most people call this the "gas cap" code.
A P0440 is a large leak in the EVAP system...most times it is caused by the owner leaving the gas cap loose after a fill up..the PCM does not see the fuel tank hold vacum like it should and will turn on the SES light and set this code.
If you check the gas cap and it is loose (should be turned 3 clicks when tightened) then this is your problem
If the cap is tight, then you will need to have the system tested to determine the cause of the leak.

I went back to Autozone with my husband last night to have them clear the code and they are now telling me it was a P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction. Is this similiar to the PO440 or should I be checking something other than the gas cap?
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

Now that is a different problem.
This has to do with the ability of the vent valve to vent the tank.
I would recommend taking it in to the dealer to get this looked at (most indepedant and chain shops do not have the equipment to properly diagnose and repair this type of complaint)
