Hey, I don't know if this is a really stupid question but Im going to ask it anyway. My dad is kindly giving me his 2003 Explorer. It is really nice, except its a V6 and it doesn't have much in terms of power for towing things etc. My question is about doing an engine swap. If I were to consider doing one, would I need a new transefer case, transmission, diffs, etc.? Is there a difference between the 2003 Explorer V6 drivetrain and the V8? Thanks for any response.

Also while I am on the subject, what engine would be good for me and fairly easy to put into the Explorer (without massive amounts of modifications to get it to fit right)? Thanks.

You would be much better off trading it in for a V8 version. You may take a hit on depreciation, but you need to consider what you would spend on all the parts swapping, not to mention the headaches! Having a nonstock powertrain will also devalue the vehicle significantly.

The value of a 93 explorer is so low that depreciation isn't a factor to consider in an engine swap, although the expense is.
A properly maintained 4.0 v6 with a few improvements is a very strong motor for towing and also that teenage desire to go fast.
If you have a 4.0 I would consider rebuilding it instead of an engine swap. You can fairly easily improve the HP of a 4.0 with a few modifications and after market parts like headers, performance chips, and cold air intake. You'll also get better MPG with the 4.0.
