Golf or GTI

I just bought a 1994 Golf(?) 2.0L 2 door at an auction. On the title and when i ran the vin on carfax it says a Golf III. My friend however says that it is a GTI.
If anyone could clear up the confusion i would be ever grateful

Well, all GTIs are Golfs, but not all Golfs are GTIs ... GTI is a Golf trim level, just like GL or DE. All GTIs are 2-door hatchbacks. For Golf IIIs, GTIs had either the standard 2.0 engine, or a VR6 ... newer (mk4) GTIs only have 1.8T or VR6, while there are now 2-door 'Golfs' not called GTIs which have 2.0L or TDI engines.
