In-progress: Project slammed subie

Hello again everyone,
One day I decided to redo my first model ever, the tamiya subaru sti. Not going to do anything crazzy, just a simple front spoiler, sideskirts, and a drag dynamic spoiler. However, I wanted to build this car to look like a streetable track day kind of car hence the slammed suspension (coilovers in real life :)). Anyways, here are some pics of the progress:

Just about how hard lowering a tamiya subaru? the front is easy but the back needs a lot of cutting, so I decided to glue the disc brake right on to the chasis. The results are as above, the only disadvantage is that the rear tires cannot be rotated which is fine for me since it will be stationary on my rack.

As far as color, it will be two tone, upper half will be black and lower half will probably be gun-metal since I still have plenty left from the ferrari. Hood will probably be carbon fiber

Edit: excuse the paint, I wet sand it to get rid of the silver paint, also the body kit is not done yet, still need to put basic putty and a lot of sanding.

Sounds cool, i'm not too sure about the 2-tone paintjob though... it will be nice to see it in primer because now it looks wierd with the 90% sanded body. brake fluid would have been a LOT easier to get rid of the silver paint no ?

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
snakekans - two tone paint job was only preliminary, I thought it would be cool since some drift cars have two tone paint job and chopped roof (although subarus are not exactly drift car). As for the brake fluid, I might try next time, I was afraid it might break the plastic.
I have an update soon, but I think I will prime it first so you can see a more realistic look

a little update, added a side brake duct (big one on each side - kind of like gramlights bodykit for WRX) and a flat plate underneath each sideskirts.

Body work looks great. What putty did you use?

regarding the putty, I got an epoxy putty from a local hobby shop and its non brand. I also used tamiya basic putty to smooth off the surface, works like a charm :) I guess I'm lucky this time, everything is so smooth including the scratch build bodykit.

the front bumper looks a little rough, but it might just be the picture. excellent work so far! i like the idea of a 2-tone color scheme.

Im so happy that this project has been smooth as silk. I wish this was the progress when I was building my ferrari lol~
I dont want to spoil all the goodies, so I will take a picture again when the car is finish.

Robrex - would you be so kind to post pictures of your skyline on the signature? It just caught my attention and I want to see more pics of that beauty!

I love the colour of your WRX! One thing I would mention is the finish on the ends of the skirts looks a bit rough? Is it just the photo or does it require some sanding?
Thanks

It looks good but the lip on the front bumper and side skirts are a bit "rough". i mean.. that's just a flat part on there. sanding the corners would make it look better. especially the side skirts because that doesnt look too realistic. why is the top all taped ? are you going for a two-tone paint job ?

S-WRX
08-13-2004, 12:13 PM
robrex - damn, that gunmetal skyline rocks! two thumbs up!

snakesans - only the end part of the skits and bumpers are rough, I didnt really sand it since I thought I was going to paint it of darker colour. Well I am probably just going to black it out or find a way to cut parts of it to make it flat and smooth. Do you have any suggestions?
Another glitch I found was the left brake duct is not smooth, so maybe I might cover the brake duct inlets with carbon fiber.

As for why the car is taped up, yes it will be two tone, either flat black or glossy black. I might dissapoint some people but hey, I want the car to be unique :) I dont want just to build a regular high winged STI with add on lip, I just want something unique and I hope the end result will be great :D

SnakekanS
08-13-2004, 03:34 PM
I agree, unique things are always better and more personnal

as of how i would smooth it out, well for the side i would add some putty to make it look less flat and boxy and sand it a bit so it sticks less to the outside. same for the front....
You don't have to put 2 tubes of putty you know... things are always easier with a picture so lets do it
front the front it looks like that : _|
i would do it so it look more like that: _/

snake - thanks for the input, I will try the sides which I think I can still fix. As for the front, its painted :( so I dont want to have to go through all the painting process again. I wish I have a reference pic for garry sheenan's SCCA WRX (2002), I was trying to replicate his front add-on except with body-matched color.

http://www.chargespeed.com/photo/ext-force/gdb_zenki/f_h.gif i doubt thats what you where looking for but its close to what your building. dont know if you seen it before but ill post it anyway maybe some one will wanna see it.

S-WRX
08-13-2004, 08:07 PM
Thanks for the photo 04rex, but the chargespeed bumper is not what I was aiming for. The side brake ducts were only an add-on and a wild idea I came accross looking at left over modeling paper. This is the simple add-on I was talking about from the USTCC Garry Sheenan's car

http://www.teamsmr.com/LVMS_Sunset_1024x768.jpg

As you can see on that picture, the body kit is simply an addon and its flat like an "L" shape. Maybe on my next subie I will build a chargespeed bumper, but I rather have the version 2 bumper instead of version 1.

looking great...i really cant wait to see the completed car :)

Thanks bibendumz, you e-mailed me your silver rex on the signature a while back, and that rex was the one that moved me to rebuild the wrx :)

Here is an update as to where I am at, two tone color is done as well as carbon hood from SMS. Unfortunately I wont fix any imperfection on the body such as some rough surface present at the end of the sideskirts and some on the front bumper.
Also, I need some opinion, should I lay down some more carbon on the roof?

the model itself it looking great, I am not diging that paint scheme though. and the rims, with that color, look to me way off. maybe add a chrome lip, or silver or white rims to it, that would make the color stand out more.

04WR-REX
08-15-2004, 11:00 AM
Looks good to me a carbon fiber roof would make it like the spec-c sorta.
things that through it off though is right now the all black wheels but on the end car it should look nice. the front lip isnt bad but maybe make the bottom flat part carbonfiber liek a splitter and i would smoother out the sides but thats just me. i actually own a 2004 red wrx and am planning to build a model soon of the way it will look very soon with the chargespeed v1 lip kit some 18" volk ce28n wheels chargespeed carbon hood and maybe trunk with red sti scoop and sti wing my kit should be in soon like few days when its painted and on the car ill post pictures if anyone wants to see it. im gonna try to replicate that in a model and its gonna be tough especially for being one of my first models lol but i already built the revell civic kit in 2days and every one who sees it said it came out sooo nice so i know i can do it. here is a picture for every one who wants to see what im talking about thats the color of my car with the sti scoop and with the wheels iw ant but the ones i want are gonna be dark bronze http://store.vividracing.com/catalog/images/chargewrxlip2.jpg

so any suggestions on how to build those peices and what kit to use would be great thanks and keep up the good work on the suby

looking pretty good! carbon fiber trunk lid would have topped it off IMO. i like how the 2-tone paint scheme turned out.

S-WRX
08-15-2004, 02:01 PM
krebs - Thanks! I was thinking about carbon trunk as well, I might try if I have enough carbon decals.

04rex - I own an 02 wrx as well, and this model was originally a replica of my car. As for your build, I would suggest getting a set of aoshima wheels if you want CE28s, I bought a TE-37 and they look real and the rest you know how it is :) by the way, are you on www.nasioc.com ?

okie........ putting the clear coat today was a disaster.... I ran out of tamiya clear so all I have was an acrylic clear from krylon brand in my storage room. The end result was my driver side red color got smeared...
All I can say is SH**!
Oh well, I am going to repaint the car, I think this time will be all black since I ran out of the red paint :( :(
