This'll be my first "custom" work on a model. I wanted to try something different (more street) but still in keeping with my love for racing. I was going to recreate the Roadster
http://www.carclassic.com/images8/CY61/CY61-1.jpg

but after some consideration I figure it might be more than I could handle at this time so I've opted for the SuperSport.
http://www.carclassic.com/images8/DD90/DD90-1.jpg

A new rear window/engine cover will be scratch built, a new rear spoiler and of course a totally scratch built interior. Plus some work on the front brake ducts and bits here and there.
http://www.carclassic.com/images8/DD90/DD90-7.jpg

This is the kit I'm starting with
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/502/164991box.jpg

And a bit of progress
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/164991primed-parts.jpg

getting some primer on engine and suspension parts. I think I'll leave the engine for now though and concentrate on the interior starting with the console and the seats.

Wish me luck and I'll update this whenever I have some progress so you can lend some insight or some suggestions.

Cheers

I hope it'll be a good clean build. I'll attemped to wire the engine bay for the first time on this car as I have some excellent reference material.

Not sure if I want to paint it red or silver though...

Heres a link to some of the reference material

IMO, silver looks better. just seems to look more exoctic, almost like an s7, maybe it's just that picture. decided on any particular rims yet?

I'll use the rims that came with the CLK kit unless someone wants to trade or I find another Mercedes kit for cheap, with the same rims as in the reference photos.

Here's what I did in the last 30 min..started the seats. Basic shape done now need to add the padding and remove the electrical boxes and stuff from the tub so I can fit the passenger seat.

Very nice project you've selected there BRM. I think I am detecting a theme to your latest builds :)
Rims from the recent Tamiya DTM kits might be close to the ones in your reference pics, just a thought.

What's up with the shifter in that one reference pic? It looks like it got sucked down or something. Weird.

Anywho, sweet build! I'll be watching this, too bad you didn't do the convertible....

WARNING: this is based on a total guess, i didn't make any search

i think that's just a reverse/drive gear shifter and it has shifting paddle behind the steering wheel, just like the Enzo...

Note that SS has different side mirrors.
Interesting way to build seats. Hope that they end up looking real.

That may well be a possibility, thanks for the clarification! So, it's kinda just like the SMG on bmw's instead of plus and minus, maybe it just has forward and reverse.....

A little clarification please? Any mercedes techs up in here? lol

This is gonna be awesome. Very cool project, finally someone is doing a race-to-street conversion the right way. Not to knock doing it yourself, but wouldn't it be far easier to buy a couple seats instead of building them? Especially since they need to be symmetrical? Anyway, this is gonna be cool. I agree, too bad you're not making the roadster, but still it's gonna be freakin' cool!

I haven't build any seats, because i couldn't make even one seat look symmetrical.

I would buy some seats if any looked like the actual seat that is in the real car. I did a mock up in some high density foam and putty and it looks alright but hard to tell because of the pourous nature of the foam. It was more a test for sizing etc. Once I build one I'll mold another seat so they are identical...(your post about molding the engine bits has gave me hope). The console contours and arm rests will be fun

I think this may take awhile but I'll try and do a bit each day or two.

After a long period of no building I started back on this project. Here is a new wing being test fit. Needs a bit shaved off here and there.

Some progress on the engine. I CF'd the air box but it look like crap so I'll try that again later. (Lots of compound curves)

Made some progress the last few days while at home sick. Just a mock up still need to BMK and CF the under tray.Used some crumpled tinfoil for the exhaust, BMF on a few parts, cirgarette pack material and silver duct tape for firewall. Some touch ups to do and I still need to attempt for the 3rd time to CF the airbox. Then it's on to the wiring.

Bit of progress in the aerodynamic department as well. Used some 1mm styrene this time as my test wing was made of .4 which is too thin.

Some more progress today on the door interiors. They need a bit more work but getting close. There not really detailed too much as the doors will not be opening. Just enough to give a good illusion.

So I need some ideas for paint color. I was going to do the 1:1 cars red exterior with yellow and black interior but now realize that I really don't like yellow and figure thats it's my damn super car so I'll do it some color I like. So anyways, I was thinking Telefonica Blue with black and blue interior. Any other ideas? Silver maybe with red?
