i need some help on my truck guys! i have an ls1 in my 88 s10. the problem i am having is with the alternater. the origanal one smoked the regulater when the power wire acidently grounded out. i have put 4 on since ( Auto Zone ) and they do not last longer than a day or more. my question is, there is only 2 wires to hook up. according to my diagram, one goes to the battery and the other one goes to key on power. i have done this same swap in a monte carlo ss and have the wires hooked up the same way, and never once had a single problem. are my auto zone alternaters junk, or am i missing something here? i am just short of taking the alternater off of my 98 camaro ss and putting it on and seeing if it works but i dont wanna blow it up either! btw, the truck is 100% painless wiring, from the engine harness to the dash harness, so i dont think there is any issue there. any help would be greatly appreciated. thx in advance.

well i had this same problem with a 91 camaro that i had. but my battery must have been bad but the alternator was keeping her running for a long time. after the battery was totaly shot so was the alt. i got on from advanced autoparts and within a month it went bad, soon within 4 months i went through 4 alternators. i thought that i had a major wiring problem, i sold the car later after that. other people has had the same problems with advanced auto parts alternators. i believe that they are rebuilt junk

I have a friend who put a LS1 in a 96 S10 and he ended up having to use the Corvette alternator to get it to fit under the hood. He had one go out and looked on EBAY and found an original GM alternator for $60. Try looking there unless you like swapping them out, Ive had nothing but bad luck with AutoZone electrical parts.

i have a GM alternater, but i wanted to make sure the rest of the system was fine, cause i didnt want to blow out a GM one. they are like twice as expensive. it just happened that i got the truck running on a weekend, and the only place i could find an alternater was Auto Zone. as far as the corvette accesories, i have the motor set back aprox 5 inchs, so it clears the back of the steering gear, and i still can use a stock hood with out a problem.

gonna put it in tonite an see what happens. the only other problem i have now, is my pcm doesnt control my trans. i swapped it with my 98 SS pcm and that works. must be the one i have for the truck is for a manual trans. guess a trip to the GM dealer tomorow is in order so i can race it friday nite. how fast do you think it will run? kinda curious to see what it will do. one thing for sure, it stumps all over my 98. haa haa
