96 taurus Steering problem

I was driving my taurus today and encountered a truly strange problem. The power steering has seem to have given out on me. The battery light has also come on. Can anyone help me figure this out? Is it still safe to drive the care like this?

Check your power steering belt as well as the altenator belt. It seems to me that you lost one or the other. If the car has a serpentine belt (one belt running everything) that can also be your problem
