GTR race logos

I am trying to figure out what some of the logos are on the GTR's that ran in 95 & 96 at LM and Monza. The West Competition car at Monza, what was on the sides. It's some script text but I don't have any photo's that it's ledgible. I also don't know what is on the rear. The same car at le Mans has a few logo's on the side I can't make out, the 2 by the Basta car care logo. The 96 LM Harrods car, what is the logo on the rear sides with a magnifying glass, question mark and globe. What does the text say. There is a decent photo in Driving ambition but you can't read it. Then on the side in the same picture there is a logo Esprit and I can't read the text next to that. Any help? Thanks, Tim

The West car sponsor at Monza was "Sal Oppenheimer & Cie". I'll have to check for a photo of the rear and get back to you.

The others I may be able to determine as well, but I don't have access to my photo archive or a copy of DA at the moment.

Hey you're right - I was drawing from memory on that - I get half a point for being close, right?

I'll try to look for the rest tonight.

It got me where I was trying to get to, so since it was from memory, I'll give you the full point.

Cool! Full points for wrong answers - why couldn't you have been one of my college professors. :lol2:

Anyway - I can't upload photos at the moment - I'm here on like a 33K connection right now as that's all I have at home until our Cable Modem service is installed. I do have some more details for you though.

The Sal car has surprisingly few sponsor decals. I guess with John Neilsen bank rolling it, they didn't need too many? As far as the rear of the car, I only have one shot in the Sal livery and it shows two logos stacked on the lower sections of the rear bumper directly below the taillights on each side. The top one is a white "Goodyear" logo. It is the full width of that flat section (probably 8" or so) and is only about an inch below those vents that run across the rear of the car. You could also say that its even with the top line of the inset area where the exhaust comes out. Below that logo is the "Castrol" square which is probably 5"x5" or so and is positioned evenly between that Goodyear decal and the bottom of the bumper.

EDIT: After typing all of this up, I went and looked at some photos of this car in its standard "West/East" livery and it has the same sponsor logos in the same location. If you have a shot of the rear of the normal West car, it should be the same. One of my West rear shots also shows a "Lease Plan" square decal to the left and right of the exhaust, but that wasn't present in the shot of the Sal Oppenheim livery. Neither were the "metax" logos I saw in the same location in another set of photos of the West livery.

I have no good photos of the side of the car wearing its "Art Sports" LeMans livery. I can see the "Basta" logo in one shot and can make out the "Goodyear" logo on the sill below it, but that's about it. At the front of the sill you will find a white "Kenwood" logo, but there are two or three towards the back of the sill ahead of the Goodyear logo which I can't make out....

EDIT AGAIN: This is kind of funny - after typing all of that I decided to check the photos that I have of the 1/18th scale UT diecast of this livery and was able to pick out two of those three logos. The one just ahead of the Goodyear logo is another of those "Esprit" logos you mentioned from the Harrods car. I explain what I know about it later - keep reading. Ahead of that, I can make out what appears to be the traditional "KONI" logo with the diagonal shock absorber running through it. Its very small but at least on the diecast version, it does stretch up onto what would be the side pod cover panel. The last one is two lines of text again stacked one on top of the other ahead of the Koni logo, but I can't read what it says at all. I actually own this UT diecast, but haven't unpacked them since I moved so I don't have one to refer to. Maybe someone else can come to your aid here.

On the #29 Harrods car from '96 LeMans race, I can certainly see the logo you are referencing in quite a few shots that I have but all of them are far too small to make out anymore detail then what you provided. I wouldn't have even known it was a magnifying glass, question mark and globe if you hadn't mentioned it. I don't see any text there, but it could be lighter in color? As for the "Esprit" logo, I can't read the two smaller lines of text stacked with it either. I seem to recall Esprit being a glass company, and that had something to do with Team Lanzante at one point. Maybe that will ring a bell?

YES, EDIT #3: Looking at the shot in DA, I can see the areas you might think are text near the magnifying glass logo, but the way the two lines run parallel, it could just be left over adhesive with dirt/dust clinging to it. Bolstering my assumption, I don't see evidence of those lines in any other shots, and I also don't see them in photos I have of the Minichamps 1/43rd diecast version of this car. That's my take anyway...

Hope all of that manages to help you out. :bigthumb:

you got it!?!

I think Peloton is suggesting to post my pics. of it...
To my knowledge this is the only one ever buildt by anyone in 1:18, at least of those custom's I've seen!
I had to be pretty patient to obtain it!

Thread revival - our good buddy Thorst has forwarded me one shot of his 1/18th scale version of the West Car wearing the "Sal Oppenhiem Jr & Cie" livery that sparked this thread and asked me to post it here for everyone.

Clickable for hi-res as usual

He still needs to forego buying a diecast or two and spring for a new digital camera. ;) :p

Peloton, you seem to know your poop when it comes to anything GTR. From your Esprit glass tip, I found that it is a company that makes windscreen repair systems and sells tools to aid in windscreen fixing and removing etc. I also found that the small text to the right of Esprit is "windscreen repair systems" so your now 2 for 2. Thanks! Tim

Thanks man - I try to make GTRs and F1s registered in the USA my specialties. I don't know it all - in fact the questions you were asking had never even crossed my mind, but I'm always happy to help out when I can.

Thorst, is that conversion, Red or flourescent red? I am assuming it's red as well as the other West liveries. Not seeing them in person, you can't tell so I was wondering what color the model is.

Red, a litter softer than "Ferrari".
