Tie Rods?

I went and test drove a 91 240SX with an SR20 and Silvia Face. the engine seemed fine except for a little more smoke than i would like to have seen at start up (no cat). once out on the road it had a few rattles and the exhaust vibrated on something like a Mofo but other wise it felt fine. he let me punch it in 3rd and at around 6-6.5 (no speedo) the steering started to vibrate (not scary amounts but im sure i it did it for more than 10min your hands would fall asleep) i remember reading something a while ago that this type vibration was the tie rods? but the guy had also mentioned that the Chassis had been straightend from a wreck? im just wondering if theres a good chance this is in the tie rods? or if anyone has any insight into the Exhaust rattle (5Zigen)?

hmm yea i remember something about the tie rods affecting that too...i know my car steering wheel shakes at about 60-65mph but at all other mph its fine....and i know my bushings are shot in my tie rod ends so yes that could be the prob. But also if the frame was bent ya never know it might be straight but not perfect ya know what i mean. and exhaust rattle...hmmmm dunno about that. Does the exhaust vibrate at a certain rpm too? Does the car have a heat sheild? cuz i know those are like baby rattles if not tightend. i took mine off. But the car has work done to it so it probably doesnt have.

one of the local 240 owners says the exhaust rattle is just because of shitty exhaust fitment and bushings... as for the Frame. if some Kazama End links dont cure the vibration ill either work out some sort of bracing or get a new Chassis.

either way im getting it thursday.

hey R.W. where are you located man? i test drove a sil80 like that a couple of weeks ago and you explained it perfectly. was it a blue sil80 with 18 in 5zigen wheels, greedy bov, and turbo timer?? cuz the one i drove had a 5zigen exhaust too, and it rattled a bit like around the driver's side in the engine bay. i still almost ended up buying it, but i fell $1k short.....

My steering wheel wobble was due to tire balance. It used to start shaking at about the same speed and after I got new tires, the shake went away. Exhaust, make sure it isn't hitting anywhere on the bottom of the car and that little tow hook on back. I had to cut that thing off so my N1 would stop hitting it.

wow 4 hours? ur crazy man, i went atlesat 45 mins, lol. that car is a great find, congrats. is he still selling it for $5500? i wanted that so bad....but yea, those rims gotta go, and those brakes, rusty as hell. i've never seen wheels that rusty. i picked a bad day to drive that car, it was blazing hot. so i was roasting my hands on that steering wheel (no power steering either) and that shift nob, lol. i still woulda picked that bad boy up if i wasnt $1k short. good luck with it man, that was a sweet ass car

o yea, he never told me it was in a accident, thats kind of messed up, lol

i drove it 4hrs today... no vibration in the steering at all it turns out it was the Brakes (maybe some Z32s would fix :evillol: )

oh really? the brakes were that bad huh. i know all that raddling was a concern when i drove it, i would of never guess the brakes were that bad tho. and yes that shift knob sucked, he had it on backwards too so that didnt help. but yea, he suggested i go with z32 brakes too, but you got the car instead, so its not my concern any more, lol

Ive already fixed a few of the rattles. the Muffler Shop Exhaust is gonna come off for a Touge Factory downpipe test pipe combo and im gonna start scouring the Junkyards for Z32 Brakes and S14 Rear upright assembely so i can do a Five lug swap

ill post some pics sooner or later... probably later because i suck at the internet.

Well my 240SX friend it looks like im joining the Suck at Life Club.

5 days after i bought it coming out of a gas station at 6500RPM 85-95% thottle. Uh oh! apparently whoever did the swap was too good for an aftermarket Fuel pump... and now im stuck with uber Rod Knock. :crying: im so pissed at myself its not even funny... hindsights 20-20 and now that i think about it i knew i should have checked the Pump...

i have yet to decide what to do.

if i had kept on it three seconds longer it would have blown while i was test driving it but apparently god isnt too fond of me.

Well, Im just going to find a Clean SR Long Block and Throw that in there. figure out what exactly popped in the current motor then either Part it out or throw it in storage for a future build up. im having major mood swings about this motor exploding... that badass green one for 7500$ that just popped up didnt help either :angryfire im just thinking once i get this and the brakes all worked out it will be even better than before... besides those damn 18s
