I have 650 holley double pmp carb on my chevelle and usually lately when I start it up it take a couple pumps to get it going, but when its hot, sometimes I have to hold the gas down for a couple seconds to get it going, then it revs super high then drops back down- whats going on? i know the idle speed cant be too low cuz its like 8-900 right now. I'm about to readjust that lower , but I'm thinking something else is going on here too.

second question- what is done to retune a carb for use with no choke? Does it start differently?

thnx- Dave

hmmm it could be alittle rich. I always try many different ways to start my vehicles so I can make them pop right off. You might want to try others sequences. Like put the pedal to the floor, hit the dash, rub the steering wheel, then turn the key. :iceslolan

just needed a little carb tune, i think the ignition was a little more advanced than usual too-

i'm still wondering how someone tunes the carb different for no choke, I've noticed that i can start it with no choke if i just give it a tiny bit of gas for maybe 5-15 seconds, is this standard? -thanks

When I drove a vehicle with no choke I started it with 1 or 2 gas pedal pumps before starting. Then to keep it running for the first minute I tapped the pedal alot. Enought to push the pump but not too much as to open the butterflies alot. About an inch is how far I would push the pedal down then let up and rapidly repeat. Yeah retarding timing can help a vehicle start also.

Umm, vehicals without choke (in my experence) suk. My daily driver (88 suzuki samurai) doesn't have a choke, it suks i have to babysit it for like the first minute to make sure it stays running. Mabey i have the carb out of tune, but id say that iif there is going to be any cold weather, to leave the choke.

i live in san diego, so it never really gets cold , so leaving it off doesnt bother me too much. Plus its only a weekend vehicle i drive for fun, so its all out performance, I'm probably just going to get a bigger carb main body with no air horn anyway. - Dave

I'll be hitting up carlsbad raceway next weekend for the first time, to see what my ride's really got.

I got some photo's to post but seem to be having trouble getting them in the message. It cant be that hard right?

hey dude, try adjusting the float,it sounds like it may be a little too high .take a wrench&screwdriver ,loosen the screw while holding nut with wrench ,after loosening turn nut clockwise 1 turn, this should be enough to take care of it being too high.[being too high will let fuel leakinto intake after turning engine off, causing it to flood]
