The chassis and the front suspension assembly are almost finished. All of these pieces are in flat black except for the swaybar which is in gloss red just to add to the suspensions overall look. My plans for this car are pretty simple I am going to follow the instructions pretty much except little color changes here and there. I want it to be white with black interior. I will post pictures as soon as possible.

Ok so the front suspension is almost done and I have started on the engine. The only thing left is the brake calipers. How should I make brake calipers so that I can get that more realistic look? Any help is much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that if you scrounge around the forums, you'll find some builds with realistic calipers... Especially the only Porsche Carrera GT build... Give us some photos.

I actually looked in my parts box and found a set of front and rear Ford F-150 SVT Lightning brakes which have calipers on the so I am going to sand the stuff off of the back of each disc and glue them on to the discs for the Yenko. I will give pictures as soon as I find my camera, I missplaced it and havent been able to find it for like a week (pissed). Sorry

Ok I need a favor, I looked and searched and could not find any pictures of this car that anyone has done so could any of you please post pictures of your Yenko. I would really appreciate it.

The best source for pictures is the Google box near the top of the page. I'm not trying to be a smart-aleck but that's just what I use :)

Ok so my idea to modify the brakes is off because with the way the wheels are you wont be able to see the brakes anyway and I don't exactly know where to get new wheels that look like the origional ones that would allow for you to see the brakes, if I found a set of those then this would be a different story. The front suspension is complete, and the engine is 60% done, I am building this way faster than I anticipated but it is turning out very well none the less. I really hate myself right now for not having my camera, I really want advice and opinions as to how I am doing etc... So I have decided to stop the project until my camera is found.

Crap, I knew something seemed a little off, turns out I am missing the entire transparent red set of parts, damn. I know Revell will replace a part but will they replace an entire set of parts?

Which wheels were you going to use? Sometimes you can file the back thin enough so that you can see the brakes. If the slots are too small, however, then you'll barely see them anyway.

ProspectZero
08-10-2004, 01:04 AM
Yeah I am using the stock wheels, I decided not to do the brakes because it would be pointless due to the fact that even if you could see them they are mostly coverd by the wheels etc...

The white part of the wheel is what I would have to cut open to make the brake disc from the SVT Lightning visable. I will save these brakes for another project.

OIC I've done that before. Just cut out the surround and glue the center onto the rim. It'll be kinda flimsy but if you aren't worried about "working" tires you can just epoxy the whole assembly onto the spindle. Personally I'd prefer disk brakes to rolling wheels.

Another idea would be to make your own caliper and glue it to that backing plate, making it look like disk brakes. Again you'd want to permanently mount the wheel or else the caliper will spin with the wheels!

I have finished the Engine and the exhaust, I have to put the radiator assembly on and then the rear suspension, after I finish painting the shocks and leaf springs, and then put the wheels and then I can begin the next part, which has always been the most difficult for me, the body.

Sorry about the large size I tried to make them as small as possible without hindering the quality much, my camera makes the picture size 2048x1536. But anyway this is as far as I have gotten, I will be doing the last touch ups on paint and I will glue all 4 wheels on as soon as I feel the rear suspension is set.

Thanks, right now I need all the critisism I can get considering I just spilled a huge glob of glue on the alternator, thankfully the alternator is all that got hit and I can just paint it back to it's chrome coating. For some reason I fear doing the body, I think its because it is the main thing you see, and plus I don't have any experience in painting bodies which is why I chose white because if I screw up while painting it will still be ok. My question is should I set the body aside for the last part of the project and just go ahead and do the interior, is that what you guys do?

Unsatisfied with the stock wheels I am very much so. I have a lot of the 1:24 Jada Toys diecast cars and I found a few sets of spare wheels and I got to thinking if I could pull it off I would have some huge wheels on this car but I dont know. If I could make this work what would you guys think?

Here are some pictures when I put the body on, the part that scares me the most is the fact that you have to pull the body open so that the chassis can fit in it, I really hope I dont crack the body.

being as the 1969 camaro is my favorite car i have built many models of them and u dont have to worry about cracking the body when putting it on.

Bodies are pretty flexible. I've assembled many cars that have to be stretched over a frame and not a single problem.

Looks good in white.

Ok so I was thinking about the body today and I want to do something different from the Yenko design. Instead of using the decal stripes I want to paint 2 black stripes on the car like this
http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/217525DSC00375-med.JPG
What do you guys think?

americanmuscleman
08-11-2004, 10:54 PM
hmm make the stripes a little wider. but hey putting them on the roof is something different.

StephenDeli
08-11-2004, 11:11 PM
My Advice to you on painting the body is do not rush ANYTHING. Rushing leads to mistakes and that is not good. So read the FAQ tutorial on painting once more and proceed with painting the body and everythign should be just fine. If all of us can lay down the paint Im more than positive you can as well!

The body wont crack when putting it over the chassis unless you try to turn it into a widebody but stretching it! It should be fine. Stripes definatly need to be bigger. Check your LHS(all mine got them) for striping tape. It comes in all colors and can save you from painting it on the car. It doesnt look that bad and applys very easy.

Lemme guess you spilled the drop of glue becuase you were using testors tube glue(dont say you werent its in one of your pictures!)? That stuff has a tendency to keep coming out on its own becuase its wierd.

ProspectZero
08-11-2004, 11:20 PM
Yeah I had planned on reading the paint tutorial several times actually, and this stripping tape, so it's tape but you can leave it on and it would be the stripes right? Is it like a decal sort of thing?

StephenDeli
08-11-2004, 11:24 PM
It is a very thin tape that goeson directly on top of paint and can be clearcoated. They are the stripes. They come in a little tube thingy and have different widths so you can choose from multiple stripes.

ProspectZero
08-11-2004, 11:26 PM
Ok that sounds like the best idea. Thanks I will check that stuff out soon.

Ok so I am doing the interior right now, it all has a coat of flat black, my question is should I keep it flat black or make it gloss black?

StephenDeli
08-11-2004, 11:57 PM
I use semi-gloss for leather and flat for cloth.

ProspectZero

I noticed that the dash doesn't have a set of decals for the tach, spedo, etc...so I am going to cut each one out from the revell integra kits gauges. I am also going to use the pedals from another kit because the ones for my Yenko are just molded onto the interior tub.

I have run into some problems, test fitting everything together was a bitch and now only 3 wheels touch the ground evenly, grrrrr this car is pissing me off.

americanmuscleman
08-12-2004, 10:41 AM
i get that alot. all i do is bend the axle very slightly till it touches.

ProspectZero
08-12-2004, 11:09 AM
When I took it all apart all 4 wheels touched the ground evenly...so something is wrong with the body or something that is making it do that when it is all together...

StephenDeli
08-12-2004, 11:25 AM
The hood/front bumper fitment is out of line as well. I take it this is not a high quality kit?

ProspectZero
08-12-2004, 11:28 AM
No it is definately not a high quality kit which is exactly why I got it cause I needed something to get me back into modeling and plus I really need to practice painting bodies.

ProspectZero
08-14-2004, 10:17 PM
Well this project has taken a turn for the worst. I really really screwed up on painting the body, so bad that I have to now call Revell and order a new body, hood, spoiler, and rear bumper and then get charged for it even though they used to replace parts for free..assholes...but anyway this car has been shelved until I feel like doing so because this mistake was quite a dissapointment and it made me so mad that I must put it away before I just do something really stupid with it. Somehow I knew I was going to screw this up. If anyone wants it to finish it just let me know I will happily send it to you for free.

StephenDeli
08-14-2004, 10:25 PM
What did you do so bad?

ProspectZero
08-14-2004, 10:48 PM
Well I read the how to paint bodies guide a bunch of times and I was ready to paint so I went to the store and got some spray paint. Well I was so anxious and worried that I was going to mess it up I grabbed the wrong stuff. Instead of grabbing the White Gloss I wanted I picked up the High Gloss Clear coat because I saw the White sticker on the top and figured it was some High Gloss White paint. I didn't notice that it wasnt white right away because well the body is white too, so I stuck it in a box where no dust or anything could get too it and was happy because I thought I did a good job. Today I decided ok another coat and shell be good so I sprayed the body again, and then I noticed something, everything was yellow and had lots of huge bubbles so I looked at the can and read the label 'High Gloss Enamel Overcoat' I was so sad at my own stupididty and I just felt like throwing it all away because I had proven myself to be right, I really did screw it up. I am so mad at myself because A) I didn't read the labels, B) Forgot to use primer, C) Went too fast and assumed too much. This mistake really screwed my up in the head and now I will probably never paint a body again until I feel confident that I wont screw it up which I can tell is going to take a very very long time. This leason has been learned the hard way.

Buy some CSC and strip it then start over. Been there, done that. Get used to it, heheh..

americanmuscleman
08-16-2004, 09:00 PM
like 008 said, use some csc or purple power and soak it till it comes off then start over again. hey thats alot better then what i did before.... lol i used almost the entire can of black on my 67 mustang model then tried to sand it down with steel wool :icon16: dont worry it takes practice.. iv sprayed over 15 models before and even i still make mistakes sometime.
