'92 - Key won't turn!

This is crazy,
For a few days the key didn't want to turn at first when trying to get the car started. This morning the same thing but only took a couple trys to go. But then late this afternoon I worked a good 45 minutes trying to turn it before I gave up. Now the steering wheel is locked too. The key looks old and worn but still works in the doors so it can't be that. Thinking maybe the key hole needs to be cleaned out. What else?

have you tried moving the steering wheel back and forth a little while at the same time trying to move the key?

Sometimes the steering wheel lock makes the ignition cylinder hard to turn.

Yeah i tried turning the wheel both directions 'till it locked to the left.
I also tried the key in a hair and out a hair.
Today I hit the column on the top a couple times and unlocked the steering wheel.
And the key still isn't turning. Guess the only thing I can do is keep on trying and be patient.

have you tried spraying some wd-40 in the ignition, had a similiar problem and that fixed it.

Retrieved a lock for my 92 Accord recently. Wanted to have it match my door key so took it to a locksmith. First time i picked it up, went out to car, the key they made me worked fine in door and trunk lock but not ignition. Tok it back inside and in a few days, WORKS LIKE BRAND NEW! Locksmith told me to NEVER put ANYTHING other than "Powdered Graphite into the lock" Also You can visit any honda-accura dealer with your VIN Number and proof of ownership and they can cut you a BRAND new Key! if all these thoughts fail, the lock MUST be repaired by a certified locksmith! Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tips everyone. I have a key I left across country that has been pretty much never used. Luckily I'm going there this week and I can pick that up to bring back and try. I also had given the wd-40 a thought and will try that after the key. OR where can I get the "powdered graphite"?

WalleyWorld=Walmart might have it or any locksmith,
or any hardware store. Seems like grease,. oil, and WD-40 attract Dirt, where the powered graphite won't. it will work in any locks also and will prolong their life! ;-))))
happy motoring to all!
Acts 16:31 !!!
Thanks!

Excessively worn keys cause this. Honda's come with two different sized keys. If I recall correctly, the standard key is shorter than the valet key which will only operate the doors and ignition. If the regular ignition key wears, being already the shorter key of the set, it will not position correctly and will not work. Try your newer backup, should resolvve the problem. It did for my 94 which was a SOB to get started after almost 200/K miles due to an excessively worn key.

Hey I'm back with the key that's been hardly used and it works smoothly. Thanks to all for the tips.

I had this happen to my 95 Accord. I had to have the ignition module in the steering wheel column replaced.
